I've been using an elliptical for a long time. Ocassionally I would experience my feet going numb. Specifically the ball of my right foot, toes, and top. I've never experiencd this in my normal activies, walking, biking, etc... Lately its been happening more often, almost everytime and its very uncomfortable. Anyone else have this happen? Any ideas on how to fix it? Thanks!

I have had this happen too! Mostly my pinky toes on both feet. Shoes are not too tight. I'm not sure what causes it but wanted you to know that your not alone!

It has happened to me - loosening the ties on the shoes helped me :-)

yep I have it happen to me too if I am walking alot. I am not sure why this is either. Probably something to do with the nerves. It is very bothersome

Happens all the time to people. Once you build up a tolerance and you start to drop some weight and regain better blood flow you will see it go away.

Happens to me too when I'm on it for a long time. I think it's just from having your feet in the same position for so long. I find it helps to lift your foot slightly on the upstroke a couple times and wiggle your toes. It gets the blood flowing again!

Also the loosening ties thingy helps too, if you have them laced too tight, like 4lafz said.
  • It is a common complaint for elliptical users. It happens because we are putting near constant pressure on the balls of our feet, which doesn't happen while walking, running, etc... When numbness starts to set in there are a couple of things I try: wiggle my toes, try to rock back on my heels and switch to reverse motion (for me at least reverse motion naturally takes weight off of the balls of my feet).

Constant pressure on the same area. When you're performing the movements right on the elliptical your feet shouldn't be leaving the foot things. Try moving your foot placement around periodically during your workout.
  • I am having the same problem. I have just recently started using the elliptical. Thanks for the tips!

It happens to me everytime I am on the elliptical......never any other time while I'm working out.
It made me wonder why also : )

When your feet get warm they swell-up, I don't know if stopping and losing up your shoe laces might help. I also have a pair of workout shoes that I skipped a set of holes when lacing up, gives more room for the top of your foot.

Thanks everyone - good to know I'm not alone. I guess I will try to loosen the laces on my sneakers. I do move my feet around quite often, but it never seems to help - Oh well. :) Thanks for the suggestions!

You need to try and keep your feet flat on the machine to optimize your workout. Push with your legs and not with the "tips" of your toes. It's very hard at first, so slow down if you have to and push more from the legs. You'll get a better workout and the numbness will go away. I had the same thing at first too but the change works.

    bump
  • Funny... I was just reading Real Simple magazine when I saw something that reminded me of this thread. The article was about health symptoms you can ignore and this was one of them. They said that sometimes it is just an issue of too tight shoes and not moving the toes enough.

    so there ya go. :-)

Funny you mention this, because I have the same thing happen. If I'm on there for 30 minutes or more, my toes go numb and get tingly.
