I was just trying to figure out where that rant even came from.

In all seriousness has anyone ever heard anyone either in their lives or on the forums attribute their success in weight loss or weight gain or maintenance or anything with regards to fitness to the first law of thermodynamics? Who does that. What a weird thing to get upset by.

I increased my energy output and decreased my energy intake, and in so doing began using stored energy supplies.

It's a simple way of expressing an unfathomably more complex concept. But at the end of the day, that's why diet and exercise work, and it does indeed relate - in a way - to the conservation of energy.

Of course, we aren't converting fat into energy directly, but rather instigating a chemical reaction which oxidizes the fat. The products of that oxidization are energy and waste. We eliminate the waste and employ the energy.

While there are a number of really interesting areas that we could discuss about these phenomena, screaming bloody murder and calling everyone an idiot is not really related to any actual subject matter.

Yeah but that doesn't really have a damn thing to do with the first law of thermodynamics which is about isolated systems. I mean the guy wasn't wrong when he said that the first law didn't apply but he also was ranting against what as far as I can tell is a claim no one ever made ever.

Saying that you believe in calories in calories out is not the same thing as saying weight loss is governed by the first law.

I was just really worried that we were going to be in trouble for MISUSING THAT LAW!!

There are "ways" to continue reading it.

I won't say more, because it's strike worthy.

But yes, hilarious thread was hilarious.

Edited to change the gif per the poster I quoted. (Even though the first one was hilar)

If he spent the 6 years working out, instead of cyber stalking physicists he'd probably be a beast by now.

The first law of thermodynamics is about the conservation of energy.

The idea that energy can neither be created nor destroyed is conservation of energy but the first law is the application of that to a closed or isolated system and the ramifications of that.

The fact that energy can neither be created nor destroyed is true anywhere including open systems however it has no real application its just a limitation, energy cannot just manifest nor can it disappear.

....and we are getting waaaay to serious for this thread. Back to gifs?

I only got through a couple of pages of that one before the OPs yelling and raging caused a brain bleed, but I was hoping to go back for amusement a couple of times. Oh well.

I did look at that OPs profile for a second ... was listed as a female  Interesting dissonance there.

This thread does look to be at least somewhat entertaining

The increase in internal energy of a closed system is equal to the heat supplied to the system minus work done by it.

The fellow said to me in a PM that you can gain a pound of mass from eating a half pound of matter.

It's a non-trivial fundamental misunderstanding of the everything.

Oh no denying that that dude was batsh*t crazy, don't misinterpret me as somehow suggesting the guy had any sort of point.

I think if anyone references thermodynamics in terms of exercise or weight gain/loss its just to say that hey...you derive your energy from food and you expend your energy through your metabolic processes and through exercise. If one balances out the other you are at maintenance, if one is higher then you are either gaining or losing weight. If you want to do a lot of exercise but you don't eat enough to supply that exercise then you have to make that deficit up from somewhere and that is either going to be from your fat stores or from just not being able to complete the exercise due to lack of energy.

Totally agree with this. This guy was just making a technical (and pointless) point that the first law specifically applies to closed systems which although technically I think is true is a bit myopic and misses the entire point of why people bring it up at all (if they ever do) which is just to say CICO is true...which it is.

I kind of suspect it was a guy. That's how the tone came across anyway. It's probably not a legit profile anyway, and just as easy to click female ... but it did make me pause for a second.

The entertaining threads disappear very quickly now.

Oh well. There's always the What Should I Eat threads and Why Ain't I Losing Weight threads and Help! My Partner Is Judging Me threads and What Does The Above Person's Dirty Laundry Smell Like threads. Over and over and over again.

lmao...so true. They just pale in comparison, though, to being called a douche bag for misunderstanding the laws of thermodynamics. XD

I've been having a lengthy PM exchange with him.

Spoiler alert: it is exactly the same as the thread was.

I suggest you shoot him a PM if you wish to continue the dialogue.

Giving that guy access to my PM box is like having unprotected sex with box of used needles.

Is anyone else feeling aroused right now? Anyone? Just me? Okay.
Not aroused. I'm just trying to figure out what would constitute "protection" in that scenario.
