Beware the Carrots and Raisins!

Went out to Chick-fil-A w/the family last night. Got their Spicy Chicken Sandwich which is around 500cals. which is OK because I knew it'd be around that and had plenty of cals to spare. I thought I'd be good for a side item and get something I thought would be healthy, instead of the typical fries w/that. I chose their Carrots & Raisin Salad, which tasted blah. Turns out I wasn't that good for me either because of the friggin' syrup they put on it, 260Cals., 12g Fat, and 32g Sugar. Next time I'm getting the Chicken Soup, 140Cals., 4g Fat, and 3g Sugar and tastes 100x better (though the sodium is outrageous, ugh!).

  • I made this same mistake at Furr's once. I hate going there, the food is gross but my in-laws took us, so my game plan was to stick with the veggies. Not ALWAYS a good idea in this case. :grumble:

It's the same way with the coleslaw at Popeye's. I was sure it was the better choice over mashed potatoes and gravy, but nope!

But the amounts of fat and sodium in fast food is the big reason I hardly ever eat it.

We have to be careful of those sneaky calories/fat/sugar/sodium disguising themselves as healthy salads!

The carrots and raisins still probably had more nutritional value than the fries, so nutrition-wise it was better, even if high in calories. Give yourself a pat on the back for resisting the fries (always my biggest temptation--after the brownies!).

It's amazing what people can do to mess up perfectly healthy good food, isn't it? They think you have to make it unrecognizable to make it edible! Congratulations for trying. And it does pack some nutrition underneath the sauce. So it wasn't a total loss. You did well, considering!

When I go to Chickfila I opt for the Fruit Cup. 70 cals, 0 fat, 14g sugar (which is all natural). At least your choice was better/smarter than their yummy waffle fries!! ;-)
  • I love French fries.

Funny how they can sneak calories into salads...most entree salads at restaurants contain TWICE the calories of a piece of lean meat with two sensible sides.

Yeah... I've been hit by that train before too! lol. I have learned to beware of anything that has the word 'salad' in the title... the seemingly healthy moniker usually involves something added to derail any healthful benefits... like mayo or sugary dressings. A lot of the calories and sugar in that probably come from the raisins though, and carrots are also a natually sugary veg as well
