What does increasing protein intake do?

I read somewhere that your macros help with body comp. what does this mean? If I eat more protein will I look leaner eventually

    If you eat more protein you will have more protein available to recover and build muscle.

    Eating at a deficit will make you look leaner by reducing fat.

    My understanding is that more protein -- up to a point -- combined with lifting weights will enable you to retain more muscle as you lose weight.
