Normal weight obesity

I've always been intrigued by the discussions regarding BMI. Particularly because I found that being within my "normal" weight range according to BMI seemed unrealistic for me. After 4 months of basic training and advanced training in the Army, I was still considered overweight, yet I was wearing a size 6/8. Here is an interesting article (from the other perspective, how "normal" weight people can be obese) from MayoClinic.com:

BMI doesn't work for me either. I was arguing with my doctor that I was in the overweight BMI catagory, and he was saying I shouldn't lose more weight. That was a decade ago. I am in the obese catagory now and it is definatlely overweight for me. I guess I am looking forward to being just overweight.

I think its fair enough to use it as a guide but by no means should it be used as a bible. It really doesn't take enough into consideration... muscley people will always fall into the overweight range but someone with very little muscle and a large % of fat could be classed as healthy. Seriously flawed

I read something from Jillian Michaels about how BMI isn't really applicable to individuals and it was meant more to measure groups of people for statistics.

If I was 105 (like my BMI says I should be) I would fall over if the wind kicked up. I am short, but I like having some meat on me. If I was only skin and bones I might be 105, but I don't think I would be very healthy.

I've always fit rather appropriately within the BMI zones - as far as what would be underweight / overweight / OK for me. I guess that makes me average :ohwell:
