Okay there is nothing wrong with running to loose weight but keep in mind the best way to increase your metabolism is to start increasing muscle. The best way to really drop weight is to do something like this
60 min walk
Weight lifting
High Intensity Interval Training.
The HIIT is what is going to help you loose weight, and the weight lifting is what is going to help keep it off and increase your metabolism.
I hope that helps.0 -
Depends on why you are running. If you are running to train for races you should be doing both. If you are running solely to "loose" weight then the high tempo run is a more efficient use of your time. It will allow you to do strength training first!0

Depends. Been running for a long time and attempting to get faster at a 10k? call it a tempo run and do one a week (in addition to distance and hills and strength training). New runner trying to lose weight? Slow down before you injure yourself.0

Before i got fat I was a soccer player for 6 years, i quited due to emotions.. i can run for miles and miles.. but the question was intensity but shorter workout is it better then a slow pase but longer exercise?0

As far as calorie burns, you can run 3 miles in 20 minutes or you can do it in 40, you'll still burn roughly 300 calories (plus or minus). One isn't better than the other; they are different workouts with different purposes that activate different muscle fibers. The fast one may even veer into anaerobic territory, depending on your fitness level. Any normal running program includes both type of workout for a reason.
If you're just going for max calories in the shortest amount of time, then speed is what you are looking for (but just because you used to run a lot doesn't mean its a good idea to jump right back into that kind of speed, especially if you've gained a lot of weight).0 -

You should increase of 5 min. every week or couple of week until you reach 40 min. and try also interval training to power up instead weight lifting so Squats!0 -
Strength training builds the fast twitch muscles which help to burn calories even when you're not exercising. Long slow runs develop the slow twitch muscles. Which is why sprinters and distance runners have different physiques. So running faster will develop more of the fast twitch muscles. To build the fast twitch muscles with running, you should be doing intervals, probably no more than a quarter mile.0
