anxious about going to classes alone

Hi folks. I thought I would share my own experience for anyone out there who's worried about going solo. When I started exercising at the start of the year, I was fine going to the gym on my own but wouldn't do group classes as I was convinced that everyone would be there with their friends and I would stick out like a sore thumb as I was there alone. I bit the bullet in April and I'm now at 8-10 classes a week. Once I realised that no-one was interested in the people around them during the workout I learned to relax and enjoy it. I see the same faces at classes regularly, have a quick chat with some and just focus completely during class.
I just thought this worth posting in case anyone has the same worries that I used to have

Thanks these posts really do help. When I have thought of going is with the soccer mom's also and I'm a big burly trucker. I'll have to suck it up soon since you say once you get going it's fun.0

I'd like to try some classes at my gym to mix things up a bit but I am soooo self-conscious and have a hard time getting over feeling like I am being watched and doing it wrong. I used to do Bikram yoga and was very good and I was generally focused on my own deal so I know most people aren't looking around for the flailing idiot to watch:) but it is hard to get out of my own head on this one.
It's the maddening perfectionism, wanting to be an old hat at something but I know I have to start first and be good later-- or not. I'd love to hear from others about how they conquered class fear.0 -
Nice post Dawn. I agree it can be intimidating going to a class on your own in the beginning. I was the same way, but took the plunge and went. Everyone there was very friendly or kept to themselves. It's a good environment because when you go you're more likely to have fun rather than suffer on the machines on your own. In the end, people should do an exercise program that works for then and that they can continue to staying motivated with. I love the group classes and look forward to going to them every day.0
