Indoor bike stands - improvised spin routine?

I've been toying with the idea of getting a bike for the cycle paths near where I live. And possibly for the commute to work. However I'd like to double up on it's use during the winter months too.
I'm wondering if a bike stand would enable me to do an improvised spin style routine at home?
Adding in I haven't been on an actual bike other than a spin/stationary bike at the gym since my teens. So zero idea on if I'd need to do additional maintenance on the bike by using it for that - i.e. If it would mean having to swap the tyres out to be able to use a stand with it? Total novice - just hoping someone can throw a bit info my way. Cheers.

You've got 2 options:
Rollers
Trainer aka Turbo Trainer
Rollers are hard. They are a couple (3) metal or plastic tubes you balance your bike on and pedal away. You'll probably fall a couple times (everyone does). http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_1163798_-1___000000
Trainers are easier cause they attach to your rear wheel and are stable. http://www.kurtkinetic.com/trainers-c-7-l-en.html
Rollers are closer to an actual road.
I also know from experience that trainers are capable of 50 mph0 -
Thank you! This was much appreciated!0
