One of my biggest annoyances with MyFitnessPal is its not geared towards people who actually want to put on muscle. I'm really annoyed when I do a search for a particular type of food because the MACROs to the food are completely wrong. did a search for fried rice and it says it has 120 carbs for one cup, one cup would have 50 carbs max. there is something seriously wrong with how people are logging there foods.

Each time someone uploads a food they need to provide a paragraph explation as to how they got those numbers. I see tons of foods with incorrect macros and nutrition. its driving me mad. as for scanning barcodes and having the automatic food database is great and all but the searching of foods is terrible and really broken. lots of people are reinforcing foods with wonky nutrition. this needs to fixed.

Also seriously where is the BODYBUILDER EDITION OF MY FITNESS PAL.

I WANT TO PUT ON MUSCLE NOT LOSE WEIGHT..

Maybe you did't know that this is a weight loss site?

I agree with the unevenness of the food reporting. If I can't find something that seems reasonable (both exercise and food) I usuallly search for it on google and then use what I find. I have a bunch of exercise calculators and use an HRM for measuring my cardio. Most places that post calories burned use an average body weight of 150 lb, so at 123, I have to work out the burn for myself.

And there is tons of info on nutrition, if you do a quick search. If someone adds a food to the database that's incorrect, I think it's up to me to not use it if I know better. I have no opinion about some idiot who is kidding themselves. ;-)

While the majority use this for weight loss - it is not a weight loss site. Many people are looking to maintain or gain weight.

I use barcodes for most products and love that MFP has many of them. Else, I just add them myself.

Honestly, I create every single entry myself and do it in grams for accuracy. I don't submit it to the database either. I don't like to share :)

well it is called my fitness pal so its designed for fitness and fitness enthusiasts. food and exercise. so why not have a bodybuilder section or emphasis for more serious lifters.

Also, to be fair, it will NEVER be accurate for something like fried rice. You would be better off adding rice, then oil, then veggies, then meat, etc. If you are not preparing it yourself, you really have no idea what is in what you are eating.

I spent a year as a wok cook before moving on to high tiered stuff, I can tell you that each batch of fried rice is different. I could easily see some white people fried rice hitting90g carbs per cup due to sugars. 120g though? Rage boy called that out right, that would have to be candied fied rice.

I guess my problem is yes your right each batch will be different, a generic fried rice option should not be there. there should be warnings and disclaimers saying these macros will very. lots of people are gonna get mislead. there gonna search fried rice and find some generic thing that doesn't even make sense. I guess it also sucks how some companies don't even list nutritional information... ahhh

Mislead? Naw, we all pretty much know that any entry with a star is going to potentially be sketch as all get out, ya know? Hell, what's a "serving"? If I'm in doubt, I'll log it, but I won't take it as gospel.

I do agree though man, there shouldn't be a generic for stuff like that. It doesn't make any sense for that.

I just had this exact issue, was looking up instant mashed potatoes and found one entry with several confirmations so I added it to my diary but upon inspection I noticed the fat was 0...uhm I just added 3 tbsp of butter so...I guess it was magic butter with no fat? I ended up putting it into the recipe builder and problem solved. /shrug yeah I know...fake potatoes..oh well

Hah! I had something like this happen when entering a 6 inch Subway pizza sub. When I looked at my fat for the day, it was WAAAAAAAAAY over. Turns out that whoever had entered the sub, while putting everything else correct according to the website, as having 180g fat, which was way off. I ended up picking another entry out of the multitude that were there.

this is a good example of what I'm talking about. this kind of stuff is all over the place needs to be cleaned up. gonna see if I can contact design team for improvements or request for more mods lurking and checking the foods.

Don't hold your breath on that, it's not a smart financial move for them to do. They already have a disclaimer posted about user submitted foods, that's plenty and my guess... as far as they'll go.

It is a fitness site, why not have a running section. There are a lot of cyclists on here, why not a section for them? How about powerlifting, that's a popular one here too.

As mentioned, there is a gaining weight section. Many of the frequent flyers in there are there specifically to gain muscle.

I see that the verification system does not clean up everything like it should, and the generic food item that god knows who added should be deleted because they cannot be used by virtually anyone or at least shouldn't be used because if they are they are flat out wrong. I understand that mfp has error correcting mechanisms but there based on people and people have reinforced some pretty bad items on there. I guess we can leave it at that if you happen to be experienced enough you shouldn't run into problems.

but may I pose a question?

what about the inexperienced and how long will it take them to learn these things? a week? a month? they could be over stepping there normal calorie goal or under eating. I guess I care too much. must be the personal trainer within me.

It didn't take me long at all as a new user to figure it out. But I'm special like that.

Me too. I was so wanting to make sure I did everything right, I looked up the nutritional values of food on the FDA site & made my own entries.

I would suggest uploading your own foods into the database if you have a concern that what is there is not correct.

You will have the best luck with this.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

    TL;DR

Seriously dude, it's not that critical... edit the user uploaded food then... there is an option to do so on the website. I do it all the time. There are a lot of people who are only concerned about calorie content or sugar or sodium... so that's what they input.

IMHO, people who upload and share partial nutritional information should be dealt with harshly. My "favorite" is when the barcode entry is partial or even completely inaccurate.

But I'm sure MFP is working diligently on ways to clean up the database. Any day now we'll start to see the fruits of their labor. Meanwhile, we can experience exciting and new database entries thanks to the seeming randomness of the search feature.

MFP is what you make of it. You're not going to please everyone. But I think they've given us lots of different options to tailor the site to our own specific needs. Create your own food and add it to your database. I do it all the time and then I know its accurate FOR ME.

On each food entry it asks if the data the previous person entered is correct. If you select no, it will allow you to correct it and post a statement saying what you changed and why. I have only made a few corrections in the last year, but the option is there if you wish to use it.

its not a good enough option there needs to be moderators who check this kind of thing.
For a free food database it's pretty good. There are food database apps you pay for that probably employ people to clean things up full time. I'd buy one if I wanted better macro data reliability without taking the time to double-check things myself.

I wish there was a way to screen for only the non-user entries on a food search here.

I'm a bodybuilder and I do just fine finding foods on here with accurate macros. Look for ones verified by lots of users or enter your own and don't share it with the rest of the site (because we really don't need another entry).

One would think that when people said Yes to a food being accurate that the number of Yeses would actually help push that item to the top of the search.....and the same as if people would click No. Or even better, too many Nos and it should be deleted from the database IMO.

If you want to add food that has the wrong data thats fine, but please dont make it public. If there isnt a food in the DB I always try and add, be as accurate as I can (with the data I have) and share. One thing the database lacks are numerous and accurate Pizookie entries. We need more of those!
