Ankle fixed...now for the weight, need support

Hi guys,
I'm new to the site and have just got myself back to the gym yesterday for a spin class after a long time out after an ankle break and surgery.
I lost a lot of weight a few years ago by cutting a lot of carbohydrates (starchy carbs tend to make me feel awful too) but the weight went back on especially while I've been off my feet and in a cast, I guess it's not sustainable.
I'm looking to lose the weight again but with a method that's long term and not so strict as I was before so it can become a lifestyle and the weight stays off.
I'm trying to be careful with the ankle so cycling is perfect for me, it's the food I'm struggling with. I'd love to hear your experiences with a diet that you have been able to see through and keep the weight off at the end of it.
I also have a bad habit of being caught in the trap of eating things that I think are healthy (like trail mix and granola for example) only to find that the calories are huge! HELP LOL!!

Warm regards to everyone
