Would it be possible to move a little bit outside of your town? Obviously I don't know the specifics of your area, but I've found in some cities (even small ones) prices are much higher than areas that are a bit out of the way. I'm talking about a 10 mile radius though, not deep suburbs or rural areas.

I hope you can find something. Don't give up on looking. The place we rent is several hundred cheaper than basically the SAME age/type/size place on the next block.

I've looked at the surrounding towns and really there isn't anything for rent in those areas. I would actually like to live in one of the surrounding smaller towns since they are patroled by the Sheriff's Office here (I worked there 5 years) and I know they do their job, unlike the police in this town.

We found a place that was across the street from us $1 more a month than we are paying now and not managed by this company. We called them several times and it went straight to voice mail. We left messages and then their voice mail box was full. Then the for rent sign came down. I have no idea what happened with that place. I haven't seen anyone move in so they might be fixing it up or something.

And yeah Kansas sucks quite a bit, but both our families live here and we'd like to stay close to them. Although we have talked about moving to Joplin, MO. His grandma lived down there and we were just there for her funeral and it's really nice. There still some empty spaces where they haven't rebuiled after the tornado, but it's really nice.

lol...I live in Joplin. It is not a bad place. If you're in a bigger city in Kansas I would not recommend moving here just because it is kind of small, but if you live in a smaller town you may just love it here! Low cost of living for sure.

ETA: I love that you think Joplin's really nice. I lost my former house in the tornado and some friends/acquaintances were injured and a couple died...lots of my favorite parks and businesses and former schools are gone, and for awhile I thought, wow my hometown is screwed forever.

My landlord was the worst. I used to be a pro bowler but I hustled the wrong guys and they destroyed my bowling hand. I have a hook on one arm covered by a rubber hand. One month I couldn't make the rent and I had to arrange an "alternative payment"...It was awful and still gives me nightmares.

I'm in Topeka. I think they may be roughly the same size, at least that's what my boyfriend said. He's been there a lot more times than me, as his grandparents lived there before they died and his uncle lives there. I like it because it was nice. It wasn't...crusty like Topeka. That was my first time there last week. I loved the Joplin falls. We didn't get to swim there because we were busy with funeral stuff, but it was so pretty to just drive past. I'm sorry about all the loss you had to endure, but your town is looking really well from what I had expected it to. My boyfriend and his parents went down there 3 days after the tornado hit and he took some pictures and I just can't believe how far you guys have come. Driving down one of the main roads I could tell some stuff was missing, but it was still nice. And I friggen LOVED Mythos. I'd eat the crap outta that place. lol

    Aww thank you!!

I looked it up and Topeka's population is quite a lot more - it is similar to nearby Springfield, MO (I've lived there and it is nice too with crazy cheap utilities for some reason). But Joplin feels bigger than it is due to it being the hub for lots of smaller surrounding towns. Cool.

I hope you guys find another place, either here or in Kansas or somewhere...it is crazy that your landlord/company is so terrible!
