Did binging screw up my EGD

Little background. I am in recovery from anorexia and have been dealing with excruciating stomach pain so my doctor ordered a series of test including an EGD (upper GI endoscopy) which I had this morning. Test was supposed to be at 2 pm, but due to some issues at the surgery center I got call yesterday while I was at work that I needed instead to have it at 7 AM. I was working a late driving shift and wouldn't have worked this had I had an early procedure because when I am working I can't eat and knew this would make me eat late.
Now I'm feeling defeated. Because of work wasn't able to start eating till 6 pm yesterday and had the procedure done this morning at 7 AM. Was reading summary report because I forgot all doc said due to just waking up and on the report it says incomplete due to large amounts of retained food. He didn't mention anything about it being incomplete when I was there. He just said there was a lot of retained food and he took biopsies of stomach and esophagus.
I know it was important to get in my meal plan, but now feel fact I ate most of cals between 7 and 11 pm is reason this was caused and I messed up the procedure that I just had to pay 300 dollars for. But seeing as doc diagnosed me with delayed gastric emptying right after due to fact stomach didn't contract at all when he had tube in there was it my fault? Should I be beating myself up over this. Feel like a failure and even more disgusted for eating my full meal plan yesterday and the anorexia voice isn't helping. My family was concerned about ulcer/stomach cancer and know I feel by wating all this so late I messed up and made the results inaccurate. Failed like usually do in life. And it's not like I can get a re-do. I don't have another 300 dollars to fork out.

Wait until you hear what your doc has to say. When he gets the lab reports back, he will have information for you. Find something else to think about tonight. It is going to be o.k.
  • If eating was going to effect the test, they would have told you not to eat for a certain number of hours before the test. My youngest son's GI tract has been tested top to bottom, and they always told us if he couldn't eat before each test.

Waiting can be the worst thing. I hope you get the answers you need, very soon!

i think they did tell her but the appointment got changed from 2 PM to 7 am.

OP what you probably should have done was asked then to reschedule since the time was changed. can't go back and change the past of course but for the future dont be afraid to speak up when people make changes like this that impact your life and livelihood. like the saying goes, the squeaky wheel gets oiled.

hope it works out for you :flowerforyou:

Usually 8 hours is the amount of time where you should not have anything to eat or drink before a test I don't think your eating had anything to do with your test results. Try small frequent meals and see if that helps your pain until you see your doctor again. They also have medications that can help gi motility

Nope--you fasted the required amount of time so your test results should be accurate. Discuss the results with your healthcare provider.

    Good luck to you
