Should i alternate exercises daily ?

Had a boring night at work tonight so decided to read some stuff online while it was quiet .. read a lot of fitness and diet stuff and most of it makes perfect sense but i always like to gauge opinions as well ..
Ive read a fair few articles as regarding alternating exercises .. so basically want i want to ask is this :-
Do i do an hours jogging/walking on day one three five etc
and do my abs and upper body stuff on days two , four and six ?
would that suffice ? i'm working up slowly to doing weights at a latter date.
i usually do an hours work on most days but I've been sharing that hr or maybe 1.5hrs between all three , but would i be better alternating them so my muscles get a rest day before being worked again?
i'm hoping someone can shed some light on this for me .. even though i may not have explained it properly. i just want to get fit and lose some body fat .. i can see the muscles slowly forming as i work out already and I'm happy with that

Days off for specific muscle groups are to allow your body to heal and recuperate. So, yeah, if it works for you. Just don't forget to work out your legs. Running builds stamina and is wonderful cardio, but even unweighted squats and deadlifts will be a good nudge before you start lifting.0

thank you ..yes i am doing a few squats already as well as .. i wouldn't really call why i do running though as i have dodgy knees so I'm building up slowly .. its crazy that so many different sites etc say different things.. i think i'd be happier alternating workouts as , as u say it gives the different muscles a chance to rest in between .. tbh i'm being cautious at the moment as i have a trip to NYC coming up and i know ill be walking a lot while i'm there and don't really want to do myself an injury before then.
i have just managed my first 5miles tonight though in under 50 minutes..crap i know but it can only get better0
