Ok, so my son is 14 and playing high school football. He gets good workouts (cardio and weights) and eats fairly well (though I do have to push the fruits and veggies and am not as successful as I'd like). He wants to start using protein powders like many of the other boys on the team (ok...most)...I know NOTHING about them except what little I've read online and even with that you find one site for them and one site against. I've love some input from those of you who have used them or have stopped and your reasons. Are they safe? What are they actually made of (because some of these sites say there are some questionable ingredients)? Are we better off just focusing on a highly nutritious diet?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with him taking taking protein powders. It would actually be great for his overall health and development. I started using whey protein when I was 14 as well. The only suggestion I would make would be to stick with whey protein because it is high quality and stay away from soy as it can mimic estrogen. I would recommend Optimum nutrition Iso 100 or Gold standard because it is high quality fair cost great taste and doesnt have sucralose in it which is a artificial sweetener.0
