Setting goals for weight loss

Just curious as to which people think is better:
setting monthly weight loss goals
OR
setting generic weight loss goals

I've been trying it with the monthly weight loss goals, and haven't been doing too well with it. So, I've had to revamp my monthly goals multiple times, which is really discouraging. The main reason I was trying to do the monthly weight loss goals is because I want to get in shape before my hubby & I start trying to conceive. I know it's not the end of the world to not lose the weight first, but that's kinda my goal.

But, since it hasn't been working, I've changed it to just having mini-goals.

All that to say -- what's been more efficient & beneficial, as well as motivating? What's worked & what hasn't for you with weight loss?
