My HRM arrived this morning and I've just used it for my workout. I know I need to subtract the calories I would have burnt just sitting around doing nothing. But my question is how do I do this? Do I wear my HRM for a rest period and use this value? Or, do I use my BRM and work out my resting als from that?

My blog post will tell you exactly how to calculate this!!0 -
You can use your BMR or better yet your maintenance calories (anywhere in between would be fine) as you will not be in a coma if you did not exercise. Say your BMR is 1500 cals while your Maintenance is 1900 you would take that number and divide it by 24 to get cals/hour then divide by 60 to get cals per minute.
So if you HRM says you burned 300 calories in 30 minute you would enter somewhere between 260 (300-1900/24/60) and 269 (300- 1500/24/60). I would go with using maintenance calories, so you would enter 260 in the example above.0 -
