I am run/jogging a 5k Turkey Trot tomorrow morning and I just wanted to know what you experienced 5kers eat race morning?!
I was thinking protein or fruit but my last 5k was a walk and I know I need energy

Thanks!

I would def eat something more than fruit, maybe aim for 200-300 cals of protein and carbs and try not to eat it right before you run :) 1 piece of whole wheat toast with 1Tbsp of Almond or peanut butter would be about 200 cals throw some banana slices on top ( bananas help prevent cramps) and you should be at 250 or so :) GOOD LUCK!!!

Whatever you decide to eat make sure it is something you have eaten before running before now. Don't try anything new as some people don't tolerate some foods so well before running and you don't want to get sick. Stick with something tried and tested.

    Good luck,

  • Thanks ladies!! I don't do morning runs so I am not sure what my system would like! Everyone definitely seems to be seasoned so I appreciate this alot!

Oatmeal + fruit about an hour before your run should be adequate for 5km. I usually mix nuts, fruit, pumpkin or yogurt in with my oatmeal about 90 mins before running and then have a banana about 45 mins before I start, if I have the time. Works great. But Erika is right - don't do anything you wouldn't normally do before a run.

    Good luck on your race!

Any running or cardio under 1 hour (60 minutes) long in the morning doesn't require food per-race/jog. But if you want, anything solid as discussed above is okay.

I am also running a 5K tomorrow morning.

I would keep your normal routine and not eat anything you don't regularly eat. I think I'm going to start the morning off with a coffee and possibly a bar of some sort. It's going to be around the upper 40s tomorrow morning in SoCal - brrrrrrr!

    Good luck tomorrow!!!

You should definitely eat SOMETHING before running or doing cardio in the morning. Getting up and racing or working out on an empty stomach (presumably it's been at least 8 hours since you've eaten and probably longer since your last full meal) can cause you to get light-headed and will definitely result in fatigue setting in sooner. When I first started running I always did so before eating in the morning because I thought I would get nauseous, but anything more than 3km, I'd say you need to get some fuel in your body -- just make sure you give yourself enough time to digest
  • My goto pre workout, so, pre-race meal is PbB&J. Peanut butter, Banana, and jelly sandwich. 345 Cals eaten 1-2 hours prior. Just a 5k ,so, it is not critical to eat so do not eat something that will upset your system.
