Savory Oatmeal Recipes?
I'm kind of sick of oatmeal w/ fruit, sugar, etc... any other ideas for a savory oatmeal? I've heard of doing it with water, soy sauce and scallions - which I'm going to have to try later. (http://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2009/01/mark-bittmans-savory-oatmeal-with-scallions-and-soy-sauce-recipe.html) and martha stewart has ones with an egg and cheese... any other recipes out there?

Haven't tried it yet but has great reviews, sounds good though (if your into pumpkins). Gets you into the holiday spirit.0 -

I second the pumpkin oatmeal recipe, I heard it's delish!
I like to make what is called eggs-n-oats. You mix eggs/egg whites and old fashioned oats together (and a splash of milk) and make it like scrambled eggs on a nonstick skillet. You can make it sweet, savory or spicy. I like to add 6 tbsp of mild salsa with it! You can add cayenne pepper, cajun seasoning, etc.0 -
Peanut butter, or almond butter or any other kind of nut butter . . . speaking of nuts . . . nuts in general, are some of my favorite things in oatmeal. I'm gonna have to try the pumpkin oatmeal! Yum!0

I love steel cut oats. They have somewhat of a chewy texture. I don't know if I'd consider what I do with them savory, but I usually just add cinnamon, honey, walnuts, and raisins. Seems to do the trick for me, I look forward to it each morning

I have pumpkin spice oatmeal EVERY morning... It's so addictive!
1/3 cup oats (steel cut or old fashion each work fine) - cook to your liking, I do mine in the microwave
About halfway through I add cinnamon and pumpkin spice to taste (about 0.5 tsp each. I also add splenda but that's optional.
Once it's done cooking (approx 1:30 in the microwave) I add 1/3 cup pumpkin puree, mix thoroughly, and then fold in 1/4 cup plain greek yogurt for some added protein, a little tartness and a creamy, delicious texture.
Top with walnuts if you like - I usually top with a drizzle of maple syrup, but I tend to like my breakfasts a little sweet0 -
Here's a recipe I've been making for a few months now.. it's like a pancake so you can just eat it on the go!
It's protein packed.. for those of you who workout! I usually cook a double recipe and have 1/4 pancake all week for breakast.
This week, I even dumped in some raisin
OAT CAKES:
1 cup quick oats
1/4 cup unsweetened applesause (=3 tbsp)
1 tbsp all natural peanut butter
1 scoop protein powder (vanilla or chocolate)
cinnamon
4 egg whites (1/2 cup liquid)
Cook in frying pan like you would a pancake (smoothen it) and enjoy!
You can eat it cold or hot.0 -

use day old oatmeal like you would polenta
This is an awesome suggestion!
I'm not a fan of sweet oats and I never thought to try them with savory flavors. Really cool thread idea0 -
I made a mushroom risotto type dish with oatmeal tonight for dinner, and it was delicious!! Between the flavor, the nutriotion, and the novelty, I think I have a new kitchen obsession...
I noticed (it's easy to guess, but just sayin) the trick to seasoning is to add the spices into the water before cooking it. yum!!
