Hello All,
This is my first post in the message boards. I've been using MFP for 25 days now. I started out weighing 260 lbs on November 1st and today, on Thanksgiving, I weighed in at 245. I've lost 15 lbs by simply watching my caloric intake!
When I first registered with MFP, I told myself I'd start out by simply counting my calories and not making an effort to cut anything out for at least a week. At the end of my first day, I looked at my caloric intake and it was more than 3,000 calories.
I was shocked. I had no idea I was eating so much! I'd make a smoothie thinking it was the healthiest thing in the world, but it was really coming in at 650 calories! That, along with a 600 calorie breakfast, a 700 calorie lunch, a 1000 calorie (+/-) Thai dinner, then two Trader Joe's mini carrot cakes (800 calories total) for dessert had me realize that I could no longer eat blindly. I could NOT allow it.
So, on my second day, I started to watch my intake. I came in at around 2200. Over the next few days, I experimented by eating different things and seeing what was more filling and contained few calories. I started to notice that fruits, vegetables, certain breads, and lean fish filled me up the most and aren't dense with calories, so I added those to my meals. I changed up my breakfast from a spinach omelette with two pieces of toast to two hardboiled egg whites, one hardboiled egg inlcuding yolk, coffee, and fruit. Sometimes, instead of fruit I eat a packet of instant oatmeal. Throughout my day, I eat some bread and cheese as well.
After about a week of experimenting, I found foods that I love to make and eat and keep me full. For the last couple of weeks, my daily caloric intake has been around 1500-1700 and I'm NEVER hungry. I just make sure to eat something every 2-3 hours and I make no EXCUSES. I do not let myself stray or get lazy about it. If I go out, I make it a point to tell people that I'm counting my calories and I do so in a serious manner so that they don't try to talk me out of watching my diet. I also tell them about MFP and they become interested for themselves.
This really isn't too difficult to do if you just make it a priority for yourself. All you have to do is find foods you like that aren't so dense with calories and spread them throughout your day...then add SOME foods you like that ARE dense with calories and try to eat those in moderation as well. Eventually, I started watching my cholesterol and sodium intake as well.
If anyone would ever like to talk about fast and simple recipes I use for myself feel free to contact me. I'm still not entirely sure how MFP works in regard to communicating with other members but I'll figure it out.
I'm so happy I discovered this. I feel so much healthier and energetic and it has been less than a month since I started watching my caloric intake. I'm not entirely sure who created MFP and why they make it free but it is really an extraordinary thing. This website has truly changed my life. Thank you.

Great job!! I too was so surprised at high my caloric intake was. It is no wonder to me now why I continued to gain weight. There is a great success rate here from what I can see, I'm so glad to read others positive notes and experiences - it gets me through my day and gets my butt to the gym even when I don't want to. Add me as a friend if you would like.
