trying out equipment before purchase

I'm looking to purchase a stationary bike or elliptical for use at home. I'd like to try a few things out before I buy--does anyone have advice on the best place/way to do this? Are there any particular retail stores that tend to have a lot of machines out to try? Thanks!!
