Hiking the Appalachian Trail.

I was wondering if anyone on here has done it because its my goal to start in March of next year. I just managed to walk 10 miles with all my groceries on my back lol! If there is anyone out there who has some advice feel free to post.

I have no advice, but I think it's an awesome goal! It would be so beautiful.

I've hiked sections of it, but not the whole thing.

Are you thinking of doing the whole trail? I'd recommend starting with sections of 20-40 miles and see how you do from there. It's not a trivial trek to get through the whole thing.

I've done a thruhike of the AT as well as repeated long sections of the AT and would be happy to offer advice. More specific questions would help me tailor my advice to you though. Keep in mind, entire books have been written on the subject.

Check out the Lightweight Backpacking, Tips and Tricks, and Gear Reviews and Discussions links on my home page at http://friends.backcountry.net/m_factor/ for a great deal of information and if there's something you're interested in that I haven't covered, let me know. It's questions from others that spur me to create new content for my site.

Stitches, Georgia to Maine, 1999 (and many more miles of long distance hiking, too)

I just started hiking the Long Trail this summer, it's what we have here in Vermont. I started out walking one or two miles a day, just local routes and logging roads. Then I added day hikes on the trail, I love it and can't stop. Did my first overnight last week, about 10 miles total, 10 hard miles, felt SO good. I always felt I should be hiking with a buddy, dunno why, but yesterday my friend wasn't home, so it was just me and my pup, went for a quick 3.5 mile loop walk. Now I'm planning a solo overnight next week. Do you live near the trail, can you start with day hikes? That would be my advice, and sure, it's fun to hike with a friend, but don't let that stop you if no one else is available. My goal is to do the Long Trail in sections, from southern Vermont to Canada. Good luck to you, do it, you won't regret it!
