Being somewhat new to TX, I have no idea what kind it is. One of my dogs is smart and avoiding it, the other was valliantly barking and trying to get bit like the dumbass he is.

Chances are it's not poisonous, but dumbass dog is going to have to spend the rest of the day inside until we get home from work. He better not tear anything up.

Yipes!! If my grandma was alive and there, she'd chop it up with a garden hoe for you... apparently the hills of Kentucky make you into a snake-killin' machine!

Ooh, ooh! I wanna catch it!

I want to name him Sammy.

And put him in a glass jar...with a twig and a leaf....to recreate what he's used to.

 You're gonna need a very large jar.

I suppose I could capture it and throw it over the fence... the neighbors have a pool I'm sure he would find quite lovely.

ha ha... I did that with a hognosed snake when I was 12- until my dad convinced me to "release it back into the wild", aka our back yard... he wouldn't eat the chunks of cheeseburger I had so lovingly torn up for him!

Um, water moccasins are large (also called cotton mouths) and very common in Texas. Other than the water moccasin, if it doesn't rattle or have yellow and red markings, it's not venomous.

We had moccasins in TN where I grew up, he's not one of 'em. Thanks, though. He's moved along now before I could go back out and take note of all his markings, unfortunately. I was curious!

The only venemous snake in the Houston area which he even vaguely resembled was the cottonmouth, and that's pretty unlikely.

Interestingly lol... apparently lots of ppl use cottonmouth and wm interchangeably? I always thought they were different... probably depends what region you are in.

Lol, sounds like my family. I was out hiking the other day and caught a little water snake as he was gliding down the river. I carried him with me all five miles until I was done, then released him back into a stream. He was cool.

I owned an Emerald Tree Boa a few years back that was the coolest snake ever. Super chill, and absolutely gorgeous. He rocked.

well.... here it is.....because I'm the biology lover here....I'll share my thoughts

People need to leave snakes alone ...there is no reason to be stomping them, crushing them, or chopping them...they are more important to us than people realize they are.
If everyone killed snakes on sight, do you realize the rodent problems we would have?? I'm sure most of everyone knows what its like in Australia with their mouse problems....they have it because people kill off snakes...now they need more snakes again because there are mice everywhere!

Best thing to do is if you see a snake and you don't know what it is, just back up away from it slowly, facing it, and then go inside....it will eventually leave and be on its way. They don't stick around for very long. If it is something you are worried about, get an ID on it ... there are a lot more chances that it is harmless rather than dangerous ... and get someone to come move it away for you.

I raised snakes and worked with them in a zoo for a few years...they are very interesting creatures if people would just take the time to realize it. Leave them alone, and they will leave you alone.

---I could probably ID it for you if you got a pic---

Mother of God, I am so scared of snakes. A few weeks ago I was walking in to work and right by the front door was this baby snake. I screamed so loud like I was being attacked. My co-worker came out and was ready to shoot someone. He wasn't happy when I told him there was a snake by the door and it was like one foot long.

    They skurrrr me bad.

A few years back, my kids did just that...and while they were away for the weekend, I felt sorry for "Skippy" being in the glass jar, went to the local pet store and bought him new digs..including a little fish pond complete with minnows. (all to the tune of about $80)..and guess what!!! When the kids returned from their weekend away, "Skippy" was nowhere to be found...I agree with previous posts...snakes are ungrateful creatures...I'll stick with the furry bearing pets....:noway:
