Could I be Diabetic?

Before you start "you should see a doctor" I am going to this week, but I also wanted to ask you guys in case I am just over reacting.
This afternoon in the office we had some birthday cake (chocolate cake with chocolate frosting)
I had 1 slice and in less then 10min I was burning up (like in a sauna) and no one else seemed to be hot.
It went away after about 30min. I get similar reactions whenever I eat very sweet things but no reaction when I eat lots of fruit.
A bit about me:
I am 26 years old
I am overweight (5'5" and 175lbs)
My mother has type 2 Diabetes (no one else in my family)
I get sleepy if I eat too many carbs
my legs go numb/tingly if I lay them straight
I get cranky when hungry
bruises take forever to fade
thanks!

I am type 2 and I never had any of the symptoms you described.0

that's somewhat reassuring
btw you have a lovely smile0 -
I don't think that's a symptom of diabetes....
If you're concerned though, definitely see a doctor. I was tested for the sole reason that my dad had type II.0 -

good idea to ask strangers on teh internets instead of your pcp.0

may I direct you to the first sentence of my post below

I am asking these "strangers" for their opinion but in the end I will see a professional about this.

As a nurse, I've never heard of this kind of symptom for diabetes, but it is awesome that you are going to see your PCP. If your appointment is in the early morning hours, you may want to not eat or drink anything after midnight just incase the PCP wants to do bloodwork. It may save you some time.
I would be more concerned over a reaction to something in the cake, like maybe food coloring or flavoring.0 -

I am type 2 diabetic since April of this year. I'm also 5'5", a few years older than you and a few lbs more than you. My mother also has type 2 diabetes. I'm cranky when I'm hungry and sleepy after too many carbs(before and after diagnosis). I was extremely tired and run down all the time before getting my blood sugar in check. My big toe use to get numb/tingly when I put my leg up to shave in the shower. Not since my diabetes medication. I haven't gotten a bruise in a long time so not sure about that.
You can always buy a cheap blood glucose meter from Walmart ($16.24) and test strips ($9.00) to check your blood sugar. Not sure if you have insurance or can afford to go to the doctor.0 -

You could be. The only two symptoms you described that are actual symptoms of diabetes are cuts/bruises are slow to heal and tingling/numbness. You could be developing the early stages of diabetes but you won't know until you see your PCP.
Common symptoms of diabetes include:
Frequent urination
Extreme thirst/hunger
Extreme fatigue
Blurry vision

I think OP is asking people on the internet to see if any with diabetes experiences/experienced similar symptoms. Of course no two people with diabetes have the same symptoms but it's a place to start. If you were in OP's shoes and hadn't seen your PCP yet but wanted to hear other individual's experiences, I'm sure you'd come to the internet as well because it is readily accessible 24/7.0 -

same here :blushing:
Me three.
In fact, I had ZERO symptoms of diabetes and my doctor caught it by chance. I was deathly ill (the sickest I have ever been in my life) with H1N1 a few years back. My doctor took a blood test to rule out anything else going on and high blood sugar appeared. Follow up testing showed an A1C of 6.5. (it's now 5.6 and sinking after weight loss, better eating and exercise. Yay!)
I do have numbness and tingling in my legs, but that is due to arthritis in my L3-L5 vertebrae, not the diabetes.0 -

Mine was found when I went in for tests to see why I was so badly out of breath after just a short exertion. Turns out I was severely anemic and the blood tests showed an elevated blood glucose, so they did an A1C which came in at 7.2. Five months later, my A1C was down to 5.6 and I am hoping it will be lower yet when it gets retested in another month
ETA: I also get tingling and numbness in my left leg but I know it is because of an injury that displaced the left iliac. If I stand in one place more than 20 minutes, the leg goes numb.0 -

As a type 1 for 27 years I can only relate to the carb coma feeling.0

Your symptoms just sound like being a normal person lol.
Your limbs can go tingly from lack or blood flow or too much blood flow at one time.
I've had a bruise for like over a month now, it still hurts, but depending on the severity they can take a long time. And certain genetic factors can contribute to slow bruise healing.
Carbs make people tired. That's why at things like Thanksgiving you get really sleepy from carb overloading.0 -
You said you have similar experiences when you eat other sweet things but not fruit...
Is this table sugar, HFCS, or both? I would assume not HFCS because it's fructose, not sucrose and you said fruit was fine.
Since you're going to the doctor anyway, you may want to ask about cane sugar allergies.0 -
It's good you're seeing your doctor. I have had the same reaction when eating carb/sweets (tired within minutes, hot flashes). You may want to consider seeing a pituitary endocrinologist (in addition to your Dr.) regarding the hot flashes. Your hormones may have a lot to do with the reaction. Get a full panel blood work done to see where ALL your levels are. There could be other underlying issues that need addressed.
Regarding the legs, there are many things that could cause this. You may have a pinched nerve or sciatica issues that are causing the tingling in your legs. There are lots of stretches you can do for the sciatica (if that's what it is). Additional help would be to check in with a good chiropractor or try acupuncture.
Stay focused and positive.0
