Flashing LED Lights on Swim Goggles?

I'm hoping avid swimmers here can solve a mystery for me, as I'm not finding much information online. I do water jogging regularly in the health club lap pool, and the other day I noticed that the swimmer in the lane next to me had flashing red LED lights on his swim goggles. That was a first for me. Is there some purpose? I would have asked him, but he creeped me out a bit. He had an elaborate pre-swim ritual that was more like interpretive dance than stretching, and then he ran in tiny circles at the head of his lap lane for a while. Then he proceeded to create a drenching wave while swimming in his lane, and even with the whole pool empty other than me, he had chosen the one next to mine. He only did that for 10 minutes, then switched to using a kick board and making even more of a splash cloud with his legs, and that's when I noticed the goggles. The LEDs were red and flashing. I've never seen another lap swimmer wear anything like it.

I checked online, and the only information I can find is swim goggles for kids that light up to encourage them to put their faces in the water (this was an adult man) and various light-up devices for swimmers in the open water for safety purposes. Maybe it's a new trend, but I have to admit it stymied me and it was really weird to see that flashing light every time he was coming toward me in the lane.

Not a swimmer myself so I have not heard of any such thing.

Maybe this gentleman was an "adult baby"?

LOL, maybe he was waiting for someone to tell him, "Stop being such a naughty little boy and running on the pool deck."
