Found out Splenda packets have 4 calories per packet (not the ZERO as labeled) and sugar has 15 calories per packet. I say "screw this. i'm going back to sugar in my coffee." I really only tolerate the taste anyway. I MUCH perfer the non-chemical-y taste of sugar. I use 2 or 3 packets of sugar giving me 30 to 45 calories (before the cream/milk) as opposed to 3 or 4 packets of Splenda (giving me 12 to 16 calories before cream/milk). I'm inclined to just use the sugar and take the "loss" since it's better tasting, and I have coffee once or twice a week at most (while working my long night shift, if I'm in a sleep deficit).
What say you, screw Splenda or screw Sugar?
Added bonus: Thoughts on skim/2%/whole/half and half/heavy cream/atrificial creamers?:drinker:

I hate splenda, sweet & low, equal and all those other "chemical" tasting sweeteners. I say screw Splenda.
I like sugar, but needed a substitute. Over 30 calories for each of my 3-4 coffees a day was killing me.
I discovered stevia extract in liquid and powder forms (brand names include Truvia & SweetLeaf) and while it does have its own taste, it isn't chemical and I have grown to like it quite a bit. I actually prefer it in my iced tea and coffee. It really does have 0 calories in a teaspoon and sweetens more than sugar.
Oh and whole milk lightens almost as much as half and half with less calories. I started by splitting the difference (1 TBSP of whole milk, 1 TBSP of half n half)0 -
That other stuff tastes awful! I say screw splenda, I love my raw sugar. I also have full cream milk in my coffee, and I drink at least 4 a day. The cals are worth it for awesome coffee!0

I say forget Splenda AND sugar! I like my coffee with cream only! But if I had to choose, I'd just go with the sugar. Splenda tastes nasty.0

If there was a "like" button in the forums, I'd hit it for every one of you. Instead...have a flower! :flowerforyou:0

I can't use sugar in my drinks because I'm diabetic. The 2 packets I use do the same for me as 8 teaspoons of sugar.0

I feel the same way....I'd rather work my full fat cream and real sugar, for my coffee, into my calories rather than try to choke down a sweetener one!0

I use the Splenda because it is much cheaper that Truvia.I use 2% milk and that works for me.I try to whittle down on calories.0

Agreed! Everything in moderation.0 -
I choose sugar (small amounts) over chemical sweeteners for my health. There are studies showing artificial sweeteners increase hunger cravings. Also, while it may not spike your blood sugar, it is beginning to show that artificial sweeteners raise triglycerides which leads to metabolic syndrome (which is an indicator of heart disease). If you are T2 or pre-diabetic, I strongly urge research into artificial sweeteners and the dangers of agave.0

I use splenda for sweetening my tea on an almost daily basis. I also use liquid stevia at home, and personally I haven't had a problem with either. If you don't like the taste, don't use them, but if you don't mind the taste it's an easy way to save some calories.I choose sugar (small amounts) over chemical sweeteners for my health. The whole "cravings" bit is a non-issue if you don't succumb to them and if you're tracking your calorie intake, it's really a non-issue. Just my $0.02, but avoiding artificial sweeteners "for your health" isn't really supported by the current research. You're suggesting artificial sweeteners can possibly lead to higher triglyceride levels and so you opt for sugar... but you should realize that sugar is known to have the exact same effect of increasing triglycerides. I'm not part of the anti-sugar crew, but using a substance known to increase triglyceride levels when consumed in larger amounts because you're trying to avoid a substance that might increase triglyceride levels when consumed in larger amounts is a bit silly to me.
Either way, use the one you prefer the taste of in moderation and you'll almost certainly be fine.0
