So I have been using the site for 1 month and have lost 12 lbs thus far. I am STOKED and very motivated by my progress. However recently I shared my experience with some friends and some were concerned that I was taking in too few calories and that it would negatively impact my progress and health. I have been following MFP to the letter. Here are my stats:
Height: 6 '3
Current Weight : 281
Goal: 230
MFP daily NET Calorie goal: 1870
I have been eating approximately 2200 calories daily, but also burning about 600 calories per day via working out, so I end up right about 1800-1870 NET calories per day.
So MFP veterans and experts - and I doing the right thing here ???
Thanks in advance!

I should mention too - that today I "Re-updated" my profile with my new weight (after losing 12 lbs) and it now shows my daily goal at 1820 (versus the previously stated 1870) - so starting today I will reduce my the 50 calories ...0

I would eat as much as you can while losing ~1-2 lbs/week (average). If you can eat 2500 cal/day and do that, do it. I'm referring to total calories. How are you exercising? I would try to increase your intake a bit and see if you continue to drop weight at a good rate. If you're eating 2200 cal/day now, try 2300 cal/day for a week and see how it works. If you still lose weight at a good rate, bump it again until you are losing ~2 lbs/week from your nutrition and exercise.

Thanks! But you don't think I am "Way off" - do you ? Some of my friends said I should be taking in ATLEAST 2800 calories a day regardless of working out .. which just seems high to me. I guess I am excited by the progress and don't want it to stop! I am primarily using the elliptical for exercise.

If you keep losing faster than 2 lbs per week I PERSONALLY would think about adding a couple hundred per day.0

Thanks WBB -that's kinda what I was thinking too ..if I lose another 12 lbs this month, then maybe I need to increase my intake a bit .... I wanna do this right of course ... but I love that it's working ..0

It is natural to lose a lot of weight in the beginning because it includes water weight but I agree with re-assessing after another month.
As a rule of thumb, the following weekly targets would give a balance between minimizing negative side effects and seeing a reasonable weekly weight loss:
More than 75 lbs. 2 lbs. /week
40-75 lbs. 1.5 lbs. /week
10-40 lbs. 1 lb. /week
Less than 10 lbs. 0.5 lb./week
