How often should I weigh and measure myself?

I know weight loss doesn't happen immediately or suddenly pounds/inches per day, but I don't want to be discouraged by the lack of results, despite my logical self chiming in that the results aren't instant.

So when is a good period to wait between weigh-ins and measurement takings?

Weigh-ins: A week or two depending on your preference.

Measuring: That doesn't often show so quickly so, a month..?
  • weight in every one a week. but make sure its around the same time of day. I like to do first thing in the morning.

I do everything once a week.
  • I don't have a scale so I only weigh myself when I go to my doctor's. I don't really care what the scale says anymore as I've cut inches from all over me. That and I'm in better shape physically than I've ever been and I'm eating more healthily. Focus on how being healthy and ignore the scale, not entirely but you don't need to think about what the scale says if you feel better and look better.
  • I do it once a month, when I go to the doc. I used to weight myself at home every week or so but I get sad when I don't see a change and doc's scale has much more accuracy.

I step on the scale daily, but I only record once a week, usually Monday morning, I measure about once a month.

Here is my reasoning, and it works for me.

I've recently plateaued badly, but then again I've had a few issues to deal with:tongue: , I'm recovering from two cancer surgeries for a malignant melanoma, and I'm doing fine  I'm proud of myself for NOT putting any weight back on:drinker:

I call it the "Evil Scale" for a reason, I use it as one of my many tools to get healthy and change my lifestyle, but I am not chained to it, my daily get on the scale ritual is always at the same time of day, after I've done my morning trip to the loo and I'm dressed in the same clothes, just my shorts. I know that sometimes I can be up overnight by 3-5 pounds, but I also know as a percentage of my body weight it is nothing (3 divided by 256 = 0.012 which is 1.2% of my body weight. I find these kinds of fluctuations can be from the drugs I'm on, or because I ate something very salty or I ate something that did not agree with me, like red meat. Using the info from the daily weigh-ins helps me see what affects me in which ways.

What counts is that Monday morning weigh in, that is the one I record, the others are just indicators along the way.

Now that I can get back on my bike, and I hope to be healed up enough to start running again in January, I know my fitness will return and with that I know I'll lose more weight, but that a number on the scale or the tape measure is not the ultimate goal, to live a healthy active life is :drinker:

    Sorry for the ramble

It's random for me. I like to weigh in 2x a week for the most part. I've seen my weight fluctuate 5 lbs in a single day. It didn't get me down because I knew I had done the right things.
  • I peek at my weight when I get onmy Wii Fit and work out. I've been updating my weight evry day because I've been losing a pound or so and it makes me feel good when I get cheered on for losing :o)

I weigh each and every morning, totally naked, after going to the bathroom! I only log on the day the scale has moved down which does happen most weeks towards the end of the week.

I measure myself ever so often but not anything consistently.

This time around, my LAST TIME around, I'm really not that concerned to see a loss or even upset when I see a gain. I know that there is NO WAY I will not lose everything I want to lose, based upon my staying below my calories and exercising daily. It will happen in time.

It is certainly encouraging to see the scale change though when it does happen!
