I use GNC Wheybolic 60. The chocolate is really good even mixed with just water. I take mine as soon as I get finished working out. There is about 20 grams of protein per scoop. So, if I'm having dinner with a lot of protein in it I'll just take one scoop, but if I'm running low on protein for the day I'll take two. I will also take one in the morning if I'm in a hurry and need some protein with my breakfast.

The Muslemilk seems to have quite a few calories for the number of grams of protein you're getting so it doesn't really fit in with my calorie intake plan. They do make a light version but for some reason I think it tastes strange and really upsets my stomach.

    Hope that helps some!

I used to drink Slimfast occassionally as breakfast/snack replacement, but found most of the protein in in comes from the MILK.
I suspect Special K is similar.

Now, if I want a sweet snack with some nutritional chops, I will drink a cup of milk with a scoop of chocolate ovaltine. It's very similar to a lot of those other protein shake products.

I drink protein shakes at night. I am a binge eater and night time is really hard for me to not snack, so after dinner and after I put my kiddos to bed I make a protein shake and drink that instead of eating the whole house. It helps me a lot and keeps me from messing up my day of great eating with bad night time choices.
I also heard that protein after a workout is good to help you recover.

When I was doing protein shakes, it was always Ultimate Whey, which is a low carb 100% whey protein powder. I got it at Vitamin Cottage, but I'm not sure if that's a big chain or not. Anyway, you want high protein (20mg or so per 2 scoops), low sugar (no more than 5), and low calorie. The chocolate tasted really good, and I always made it in my mini blender with milk, ice, an egg white, and berries of some sort. So delicious and filling!

I had them for breakfast every morning when I had them, usually right after working out.

Unless you work out a lot, especially weight training, your protein should come from natural sources. There is no need for protein shakes, a healthy clean food plan is all that is necessary.
I would always rather eat a meal than replace it with a drink, but that is my personal preference.

Do you plan on using the protien for recovery or as a meal replacement?

Protien shakes after a workout are great for repair, recovery, and they help feed the hunger that comes from a good workout.

If you plan on using it as s meal replacement I recommend taking it for breakfast.

Whatever your choice remember to count those calories. Some of those shakes are loaded with calories.

I had finally sat down with a professional who tweaked my eating habits. Majority of my weight gain was due to late night snacks or meals before bed. I couldn't sleep if I didn't have anything in my tummy. Now breakfast is the biggest and my last meal is the lightest and 4 hours before bed.
I know allot of guys that pound protein shakes before bed and it works for them. Personally I’m just getting away from habits that will let me slip back into my old routines.
I eat 5 times a day every 2 hours. My shakes are my in between meal snacks. It took about 2 months for my night time eating habits (hunger pains) to go away.
Congratulations on your weight loss. Keep up the good work.
Keep me in the loop; I’m interested in what direction you decide to go...

Protein shakes are great for after workouts (refuel without over-eating) and to have on hand in case you find yourself starving and without healthful food. Better a shake then fast food or a box of cookies.

Also, they can be extremely helpful in making sure you feel full if you cut a lot of bad, bulky foods out of your diet (like pasta, bread, potatoes, etc.) I know if I don't get enough protein from my meals I start to feel faint by two and shakes prevent me from crashing or binge eating.

i'd probably be drinking them as a in between meals snack or a "just worked out im starving, and feel like i could eat the whole house" kinda thing. haha. im gonna try to add more protein in my foods while i try to figure out which shake i think won't be gross :(

I use them occasionally, like after a workout or when I'm skipping lunch at work.

I will say this, pay attention to what is in the one you decide to use. Stuff like SlimFast can be LOADED with carbs that you may not want/need. I like the Jay Robb shakes - they're sweetened with Stevia, so it's a natural sweet without the extra carb content. And I think they taste great.

As an aside, I'm a binge eater as well. It's taken a lot of work, but there are ways to get "past" the eating issues. Sometimes you just have to catch your triggers instead of feeding them. Maybe something as simple as hot tea at night would be what you need to curb the binge desire before bed, without adding a bunch of extra calories to your day. You can search around on here and find a number of people who share the same late night eating problem (I think there is a thread dedicated to it, actually).

    Good luck! :)

I'm a night worker outer too. So I ate more earlier in the day to make sure I had enough to fuel my work outs, plus I made sure I had a little snack (carrots and almond, for example) about an hour prior to hitting the gym. Oh and, I'd have the protein right after I work out. So if you are finding yourself really hungry late, try moving your meals around more (another poster eats a similar way - heavy in the morning).

You'll get it figured out! It takes time and trying different things. A year ago I never thought I would be doing the things I do now. :)
