Gym awkwardness

I want to get started lifing. I have read all of the stronglifts info. I want to start the program but I don't know how to ask for a spotter at the gym. (or ask someone to be my training partner (this is what I really want)). Any advice for a newbie?

Work with a trainer. Can't go wrong working with a one at least in the beginning. A trainer can get you started with the right form and the right mix of exercises.
For me, a trainer helped me work properly with free weights. Before that I tended to stick to machines.
Working out with a friend is okay too. But keep in mind, that a friend may teach you their bad habits.

    You don't need a spotter

and if you think you do...

ask someone who is resting- hey can you give me a spot?

at this stage you probably dont need a spotter. the only lift you really would eventually need a spotter for is the bench press and unless you're working close to your limit it's not going to be necessary. all the other lifts if things go bad you can just drop the weight

and yeah, when you do get to the point where you need a spotter, just be like hi, would you mind spotting me while i do this set of 5? just make sure that person is on their break as well
