Bean salads and cats -- anybody else have this problem?

One of the problems of opening cans of beans so often for supper salads this summer is that the cats hear the sound of the can opener and come running to the kitchen meowing "Tuna!" at the top of their lungs. I actually have to hold the can of beans down at cat level and let them each sniff it before they will leave me alone!

Anybody else have this problem?

Yes! Either the sound of cans being opened or their little plastic dishes clicking for any reason and they're right there, meowing and wrapping around my ankles to get their daily bit of canned food...even if they've already had it.

It took a while, but I finally managed to train them to lay at the edge of the kitchen door on a piece of polar fleece when I cook. They don't come in the kitchen when I have the fleece laying there. My problem child will reach one paw out until she has it on the linoleum and then wait to see if I will "tssst" her. As soon as I do, she pulls it back and lays her head down to just watch what's going on.

Cans of food - any sort- get my cat and dogs attention, maybe 'cuz they associate, but I really think that they just love food and are chancing that I'll give them a treat!

Our feral cats will appear out of nowhere when they hear any sound that they associate with food in my Outside cooking area. And they will eat anything including, beans, croissants, bread, upto and including cucumbers. One tonight was eating a quite spicy Chilli!
  • Of course they have to sniff and approve...you are their human

Bahaha... I don't have cats, but my guinea pigs freak the heck out when they hear any kind of plastic bag. So coming home from grocery shopping sends them into hysterics. And they also freak out when they hear the fridge opening. Or when you turn the water on in the kitchen. Or when you walk close to the door of the room where they live. They pretty much freak out about everything. They're very excitable.

I thought this was going to be about bean-induced cat farts.
