Heart Rate Monitor

ok, so I've decided that I need to start living a healthier lifestyle. Part of it is food, but part is also exercise. I just realized that this is my last year of free gym membership (my university gym). I haven't used it often (the cold is great for excuses) but really want to start using it to help with my weight loss and health (mild asthma that get's bad depending on my weight).

Since I normally do ellipticals or zumba classes, there is no accurate way to measure the amount of calories I burn. I've read a couple of forums here suggesting heart rate monitors. So I have to ask...

What is a heart rate monitor? How does it help calculate calories? And are they accurate?

Last...would you recommend I get one as I begin trying to live a healthier lifestyle?
