Weight gain when stopping Topamax

Hiya!

I took Topamax for about 4 years and maintained the same weight the whole time. It worked wonderfully for me -- no noticeable side effects, and I had about 1-2 migraines with aura a year instead of 4-8 each month. However, I want to get pregnant, so I stopped taking it completely after almost 6 months of tapering off at the end of May. Since I stopped taking it, I've gained 4-5 pounds from where I was for those 4 years, which doesn't sound like a lot, but it's worrisome because I have not changed my eating habits and I'm actually exercising more. I'm just afraid the steady gain has something to do with the meds and I won't be able to control it with diet & exercise. Anyone have this experience, and did your weight eventually level off? Appreciate anything you can share!

  • I was taking topamax for 3 years and it worked wonders for me as well. I had maybe one migraine a year instead of every other day. I too lost alot of weight without trying. I stopped taking topamax to get pregnant and gained 40 pounds of weight without changing my diet. I could gain 5 pounds in 2 days it was a little bothersome. Once I gained those pounds the weight finally tapered off. I did hear that if you lost weight with topamax you would gain it back once you stopped. I am taking the medicine again because after my pregnancy the migraines came back with a vengeance. Good luck to you.
