White Rice

Okay so rice is a very important part of my family's diet and since I don't cook, I have absolutely no control over switching from white to brown rice. My whole family prefers the white rice while I want brown and since I'm in minority, I usually get ignored. Hence my question is, if I eat white rice once daily in a very moderate amount, will it slow down the process of losing weight? I have a lot of control over my eating habits so I'm pretty sure that I won't over eat.

Thanks :)

I live by nothing is bad for you in moderation! So if white rice is being served eat a little then eat more vegetable and lean protein with it!

I don't think it would because when I go to Brazil (to be with my fiancé :) ), Brazilians eat white rice and beans for almost every meal, and I always LOSE weight when I'm there... so I don't know why I lost the weight, but the white rice didn't make me gain so in moderation you should be fine

My family almost always makes rice with any meal. I could eat a bowl of plain white rice as a meal and LOVE it!! Maybe you could do something like Minute Rice Individual cups. You just microwave them. They have different flavors (brown, white, yellow, pilaf, wild) and they range anywhere from 190 (yellow) to 230 (brown) calories per serving.

It certainly won't kill you but there's not much nutrition left in white rice, it's like the difference between white bread vs. a hearty whole wheat bread. The white rice has had all the healthy elements removed where as the brown rice is in tact. Some have had success in mixing the two so family members can realize it's really delicious and has a nice flavor. I used to love white rice/Minute made of course with butter or shredded cheese..never got full on the stuff. Brown rice? mmm...a serving is perfect, fills my body and is a very healthy food to enjoy.

Edited: it's not simply the cals that make the difference. It's how the white rice has been handled and so empty of food value after, vitamins, etc. are all added back after stripping it of nutritional value. Doing a cals vs. cal on rice is only a small part of seeing the difference in the nutritional value.

    i feel your pain!

there was always a pot of white rice ready to go everyday at my house growing up, if there wasn't any rice made one day, someone would be on it stat!

i just finished my supply of white rice here and bought my first bag of brown rice, since i HAVE to eat rice! i've never actually eaten brown rice before, so i'm excited to give it a try!

if you have no control over the rice that's made at your house, why don't you buy a bag of brown rice for yourself and make a small pot of it for yourself?

I agree with making your own pot of brown rice. But if your family is picky about you eating the same, then it shouldn't hurt. I think that brown rice has more nutrients, but it doesn't make white rice bad. It would only be bad if you stuffed yourself with it frequently.

OH WOW, I CAN DEFINITELY RELATE!!!
We had this problem until recently. I used to just eat the rice and ate a lot of veggies to make up for it but one day I told my parents that I had to be strict with my diet and so they bought me a little bag of brown rice that I cook myself and so far the bag has lasted a couple of weeks or so?
So maybe try and compromise something out?

Sorry, I couldn't help much. Just thought I'd share what I did xD
    GOOD LUCK :)

Some have shared they cook it in broth (sodium free) and enjoy it that way, though I've not tried that I'm looking forward too. I can see starting out it might be the way to go so it adds some flavor:flowerforyou:
