i have been working out everyday for a week solid and i have been losing about 1/2lb a day, which is fab...i have been burning between 1000-1200 every day and eating between 1400-1500cals

but today i have burnt 1500(used a hrm so know it's accurate) and only eaten about 900ish!

it is 10.45 in the uk so i don't want to be filling up on food so late at night, yet with such a burn and having eaten so little calories....will it make a difference if i don't eat my allotted 1200 for one day!?!

last thing i want is a gain after such fantastic losses this week

Replies

  • It will probably not make a difference for one day. You may retain a bit more water for tonight tho.

However I am sure there will be numerous people besides myself who comment on this and tell you that half a pound a day is not healthy weight to lose.

I am sure you are killing your muscles and not burning fat.

P.S I just realized you only eat about 500 calories a day?! (Calories - Exercise calories). You need to eat more!!

i don't lose that much everydays...i have a funky cycle of lose...stabilise for a day or so, lose again, maybe gain 0.5, then lose 1lb etc, it's not a constant every day loss...should have worded that differently)

i do try to eat alot more but i never really feel hungry or have time to eat...i look after my 2yr old that has a severe disability, and my energetic 1yr old so time to sit and eat doesn't really happen until after they are in bed

    Riiight..........

It probably wont hurt any more than all those other days..

I would STRONGLY encourage you to read this:

No offense but than how are you burning 1000 calories a day? That is a lot of exercise.

Second, have a protein shake for some higher calorie intake. You need something tho, because soon you'll just, if not already.. You will just be burning muscle and leaving fat. You want to retain muscle and lose fat. Not just the number on the scale. Trust me.

No one day won't hurt you - but keeping up the routine you are in already will hurt you big time. You should be eating more like 2000+ cals a day not 1200.

after the kids are in bed, they both go at 6pm, so i'll grab some dinner and then do a workout, but by the time i'm done working out it's too late to eat more going by the 'no eating late' rule

thanks for the advice and links :) i'll get reading as soon as

Try planning your meals beforehand! It helps a lot. Also, being so busy, some protein and carb shakes could be a passable meal replacement. Not ideal, I know, but would help you get enough calories quickly and easily.

Btw. The 'no eating late' rule is really bad rule in this case since you REALLY need that food, unless you get some bad stomach aches or something if you eat just before going to bed..

If you can't get more calories, you really should cut back on workout untill you can have your diet in order! Training is a tripod, Exercise, Rest, and Diet. What happens if one of those legs is bad?

Where is this rule you speak of? It has been said over and over and over. The time of day you eat does not make a noticeable difference on you're body. If you are exercising and burning over 600 calories a night, you damn well need to eat after that. Or you will develop serious health concerns. This is not a joke.

i really do appreciate your advice. i've read people giving tips saying don't eat after 8pm etc, so i figured it was something i should stick to.

i am aware it isn't a joke...i wouldn't be sweating my backside off for 2hours after a long day dealing with 2kids if i thought it was, and i really don't want to damage my health so i will endeavour to eat more, and incorporate a protein shake also to help with repairing muscles

Not eating after 8 is a luxury most of us don't have! I get off work at 6, my husband 7, home around 8 then we have dinner. Know that - there are no hard rules for any of this stuff. Even the exercise calories - yes you need to eat them, but how much depends on your body and how it burns and reacts. When you eat, how much per meal, the minimum you can "never" go under, what % of carbs you should or should not eat ... none of it is written in stone. You'll find the balance that works for you. The main important thing is to keep yourself fueled for your lifestyle. Some people who don't eat after 5 are in bed by 9 and up by 6. Others eat at 10, are in bed at 1 and up at 9... you can do some research into what are the best types of food to eat in the evening / night, some say no/low carbs in the evening. It's all so complicated. Try something, watch the scale / tape measure / how you feel and go from there. There are "rules" but following them can be bad for your health too since everyone is different.

I dont think one day will hurt you at all!! I only eat around 800-1000 cals a day and i try to burn atleast 200 by playing just dance and I am still losing weight. Just be careful because eating such a low amount of calories is a gateway to an eating disorder...I had an ED in High School and only like 150 cals a day (300 max) so just be careful because if you eat very little for very long you will start feeling guilty when you eat the calories you actually need! good luck :)

First of all, I wouldn't overreact to some of the overwrought comments on this topic. I doubt that the sky is falling.

I suspect that your hrm is overestimating your caloric expenditure, so I would not rush to eat more food. It's hard to tell from your post exactly where you are. Your sig suggests you have lost 30 lbs so far, yet you mention you have been working out for a "week solid". Is this a significant increase in exercise activity?

You have a lot of things going on, so I am reluctant to get too specific--your situation sounds dynamic. I can understand that you are on a "wedding deadline", which means you might do some things that normally we would consider counterproductive in the long term. It's a trade off--on the one hand you can do a "crash" program to get maximum short-term results for your wedding. However, it is quite possible that you will be setting yourself up for a much higher risk of long-term failure. Or, you can "throttle back" a little now, maybe miss your goal by 10lbs, but still be looking good a year from now. You are going to have to make that call. To be honest, 23 more pounds in 6 weeks is a little unrealistic, esp if you have already lost 30. At some point, the combination of low calorie intake and high volume of exercise starts to work against you.

What I would recommend is that , if you are doing 2 hr workouts, on those days you take in at least 1600 calories. In your case, I am going to say go with 1.5g of protein per kg of body weight and about 50% of calories from carbs, and 25% from fat. The time of day for meals is not that important, but it is helpful to eat right after a workout. Your exercise routine should also include an appropriate amount of strength training, along with cardio.

PS regarding having time to eat. I imagine that your kids eat several times a day? So, why not eat with them. Even an egg on an english muffin as you make them eggs takes no extra time and can be eaten one handed while feeding them etc. Extra chicken nuggets take no time to make if you are making some already.

And in the evenings you can make a stash of peanut butter on whole wheat sandwiches that you can just grab and eat when you are running around. "Sitting down and eating" does not have to be an hour, or even a 1/2 hour or even 20 minute project! I can eat a fried egg on WW toast in about 6 minutes egg crack to last swallow. I have also been known to eat PBJ or PB toast in the shower on particularly time pressed days. Don't let "no time" be an excuse!

just a hour and a half burns over a thoughsand for me..but im really big, and i set the incline almost all the way up and the resistance to 50, and i put alot of effort in to it....even my trianer is like, "calm down tracy! its ok to take it slow for ahile" lol
but yeah its totally possible to burn that aday.. (atleast for me)

First, if you know you're going to work out at night and know ahead of time (based on past experience with said cal burn) eat more during the day (i.e. breakfast and lunch) to get your extra calories in so you don't have to wait until late at night.

Second, the "don't eat late rule" has nothing to do with your body metabolising your food differently. Your body will metabolize your food at 11pm just as it will at 3am or 1pm. The only reason why people say don't eat too late or too close to bed time is because some people can get heartburn or indigesting from eating (too much) and then lying down. There are times that I won't get to eat dinner until 9pm and go to bed at 10pm and have experienced absolutely no negative side affects to my weight loss.

    Hope this helps!

I think that that rule helps if you have trouble stopping eating once you've started in the evening. I find that I don't if it's something that I have planned for before but if I just spontaniously take some snack with me to wach TV.. Well.. It doesn't work!
    So my rule would be:

"You may eat ANYTHING in the evening, .... PROVIDED that you have planned for it at least 10 hours before and it already fits to your food diary."

  • I apologize if that post may have been a bit.. 'forward'. But a lot of people don't realize the importance of eating food. Like someone said above you may be over estimating how many calories you burn. None the less, even without exercising you need to eat at LEAST 1200.

With exercise you will probably need to be at about 1500. Just try to remember it is not so much about weight loss, but about being healthier and looking healthier.

P.S the reason most people don't eat at night, is because people tend to over eat at night. Or eat to many bad types of food.

I don't eat a lot because I don't have a huge appetite....When I start out dieting I cut waaaaay back...like feel like im gonna starve(i know its stupid) but anyway after i start eating what i want but my appetite is usually low...also we tend to eat out a lot so I am very concious about anything fried so i tend to order kids meals (chicken nuggets) with whatever fruit they offer....but anyway i just dont have much of an appetite!
