    I don't really eat fast food, but when I get a real craving for "naughty" takeaway food of some kind I've found that it's really helpful and lots of FUN to try and recreate a healthier version. I've successfully managed this with pretty much all the stuff I crave. Everything in moderation, so you can still eat the fast food burgers every now and again, of course! But I like the challenge of creating my own version for a fraction of the calories. Also means I get to indulge a bit more often! :)

    HOWEVER. I will say this - I am down about 70 lbs. I'm at maintenance.
    I didn't cut ONE SINGLE THING out of my life or diet when I started this EXCEPT fast food.

    For me, my three food weaknesses that I refuse to EVER give up are:
    1: Cheeseburger and fries
    2: Mexican food
    3: Ice cream

    And I didn't and haven't. Once a week from day 1, I made sure I ate a cheat meal and it was one of those three things. I decided though that if I was going to have it, it was going to be a GOOD one ya know? Why eat a crappy McDonalds cheeseburger when I could have a really good quality one at a local restaurant near our house. Why eat frozen french fries when I could order fresh cut ones somewhere. Why eat taco bell when I could eat better Mexican (and allow myself way more chips/salsa than I should normally) or even make it at home with all fresh ingredients (the only real calorie cheat for me that way was dousing on the cheese and/or sour cream)

    It's been a year and a half and I haven't touched fast food except ONE time. I was going right from work to a rehearsal and I forgot to pre-pack dinner for myself. I stopped in a Wendy's drive-through and ordered a jr cheeseburger. I took one bite and literally spit it out into the paper. It was the most disgusting thing I had ever tasted. It tasted like chemicals. BIG TIME. It was a huge eye opener for me.

    So MY personal advice? If you want the type of food that you get at fast food - then get it. But start going for better quality "crap food" ;) I never even think twice about fast food any more.

    I eat fast food, but i just make sure I keep the rest of my day good. I have lost 84 lbs and eat foods I like - not as often as I used to though, believe me. I just stay within calories, and if I do accidentally go over my calories I do a kick butt workout at night.

    I agree with this entirely.

    I do not demonize food, so I will not cut out any foods because they are "bad". I will certainly cut out foods, however, that I now find repulsive since getting fit and fueling my body with mostly whole, healthy foods. I can have McDonald's. Anytime I want. But for the most part the idea of it disgusts me, and I choose to get a better bang for my calorie buck.

    When I first started dieting I kicked all the crap out because I was addicted to it. I'm talking excessive amounts of sugar and fast food. Not really because it was unhealthy, but because I couldn't sit down and just have one burger or one small fry. I had to have 2 burgers, a large fry, an ice cream and a large coke. So for me, it helped kicking that stuff out at first.

    However, once I could get myself under control I've reintroduced a lot of the things I enjoyed like Chinese food, pizza, and ice cream. The difference is I portion it and make it fit into my day. Also, since I've gotten a hold of myself, I view food A LOT differently. That burger is going to have to be the Mecca of ALL burgers to make me want to sacrifice my precious calories.

    Same with sweets. I'm not going to go to the grocery store and get a crappy store cheesecake. Oh no, I'm going to The Cheesecake Factory and getting the real amazingly high calorie deal. The main difference is I don't do this all the time. But when I want it I will have it and it WILL be worth it!

    I've lost 49lbs since I started mid January. It's just the approach. Cutting all those foods out long term was not sustainable for me. I've failed so many times trying to kick that stuff out that I snap and go overboard. It's just a matter of balance. If you must have it, portion it out and fit it in your day. Don't let food be your enemy!

    Yes, really. I just fit these things into my day.

    This is what my week looked like:

    Monday: Wendy's Jr. Cheeseburger deluxe, value sized fries, diet coke - 570 calories
    Wednesday: Taco Bell Quesarito, Chicken, diet pepsi - 620 calories
    Thursday: McDonald's Fruit & Yogurt Parfait, McDouble, Small fries and diet coke, 770 calories
    Friday: Papa John's Grilled Chicken Pizza - 3 slices, 930 calories

    The trick is just finding the balance with your other meals. As long as you fit them, there's no reason to cut these things out.

    Eat in a way you plan to for the long term. I plan to eat all the food I want, with moderation, and fitting them into my caloric needs, whether I'm losing weight, maintaining, or gaining, for whatever purpose.
