Binge and Eating when NOT hungry

it seems so obvious. but... I realize I eat (a LOT) when I'm not even hungry.
I started reading the book, "How to eat your cake and have skinny jeans too: how to stop binge eating, overeating "
Its very eye-opening! Wow. I didn't realize how many bad, bad behaviors I have adapted with food, and "dieting".
Naturally thin people don't obsess about every calorie, every meal, .. they eat when hungry and when not hungry, they don't. Duh.
Just something I thought was interesting. I'm only halfway through the book, but I'm already trying to focus on a more positive lifestyle and a successful relationship with food.
Have a nice day, all

I am so glad I lost my first 30-40 pounds without anything but my doctor's advice. I didn't weigh myself, much less every ounce of food I swallowed, lol.
This whole weight loss thing can be as easy or as complicated as you want to make it.
Eat healthy stuff when you're hungry and don't eat when you aren't hungry. It's the easy way, but it will work, too.0 -
The description of this book on Amazon looks fantastic. I believe that I ended up getting similar advice from my new and wonderful friends on MFP. Food isn't "bad". You don't have to deny yourself to lose weight. For a chronic overeater, food taboos and self denial can become a punishment which leads to an inevitable binge. A painful cycle that feels impossible to break.
For me the binge habits were not obvious. I ignored my problem all the way to 325 lbs. Food had become my best buddy, the constant companion and instant source of relief. Thank goodness for decent health insurance. I got a therapist and dealt with the source of the problem. That book certainly would have been cheaper! LOL
Until I am back at a healthy weight, I have to count calories and be mindful of snacking. It's going to take time for my new habits to become the default behaviors that I had as a thinner person Every day it gets a little easier.0 -
Yep. I agree with all of what you guys have said- thanks for the input! and yes- it is simple when you think about it
Eat when hungry, let your body tell you. If not hungry, don't eat, even if it's "time to eat".
Stop eating when satisfied.
Eggo- I totally understand. My binges came on and I didn't even realize it. I was driving myself insane obsessing about food then eating mindlessly 1000's of calories. Never even really tasting the food. and , one of the keys in this book is to enjoy the food that you really want.... not labeling "good" vs "bad". No crazy restrictions. So far i'm really relating to the message, and I'm not one to usually buy self-help type books.
I'll see how i do over time with the "stop eating when satisfied" part ,.,,, that can be easier said than done, because it's usually not actual, physical hunger driving that.0 -

You are correct. This is a thing you DO, not a definition of who you ARE.
"Stop eating when satisfied" comes easier once we remove emotion from our food choices. Learned this, I have.0 -
It really is what you eat. I have found myself eating way too much cause I wanted the doughnuts from the supermarket cause they were cheap and I felt like them...and there were 6 of them... and I had no one to share them with0

And I don't feel like spending $30 every day on individual serves of everything.0
