High Cholesterol

I'm surprised to hear from doctors that I need to focus on a low fat diet to help reduce my cholesterol. Any suggestions on what kinds of food to stear clear from and what foods to eat?

Believe it or not at my weight I have perfect cholesterol not sure how but the doctors seem to think either great genes or its how I eat. What I have been told that helps with the cholesterol is oatmeal, whole grains, and red wine. I do not eat red meat not for any special reasons just never been a huge fan. I have while trying to lose weight have incorporated a lot more veggies including the green leafy ones. If you can stomach it go for oatmeal they say its great I personally cannot choke it down. My doctor says red wine can help you having a glass every now and then. Hope this helps.

The doctor told me the same thing. Things I have limited in my diet are: fast food, butter, high fat meats, cakes, cookies pastries, whole fat dairy and egg yolks.

I haven't cut them out of my diet but I only eat them sparingly and usually as some kind of "treat". I increased my intake of green leafy veggies, high fiber foods (like oatmeal), fish/omega 3, and added nuts.

The American Heart Association has some great information regarding lowering cholesterol. www.heart.org

    Our bodies make the cholesterol.
A small fraction of the cholesterol in a bodies is because of diet.
Continue to eat good fats (our bodies need those.)
Watch out for trans fat --- > store bought baked goods, chips, fried foods, creamer, margarine.

Meh, I don't believe in low fat = low cholesterol. I do not eat low fat/fat free and my cholesterol is good (LDL 113, HDL 140, triglycerides 66.) Eat good fats, eat your fruits and veggies, and exercise. I eat few grains (maybe 2 servings a day), a ton of raw fruits/veggies, beef, chicken, pork, bacon, full fat cottage cheese and yogurt, 2% or whole milk, etc.

    Yup. AHA.

I'm surprised your doctor didn't explain any of it to you. So disappointing. The AHA website is a good one.

This site is more focused on weight loss than overall health. AHA is a much better site. :)

I would do your own homework, nutrition and diet are invariably massive blindspots in most doctors knowledge, and you are better off either taking to an expert (nutritionist/ dietician), or taking on the task yourself to educate yourself.

In the case of cholestorol for example, it has been shown that saturated fat actually transforms the most harmful sorts of LDL cholestorol, the small dense kind that can pass through arterial walls, into much less harmful, larger LDL molecules that cannot pass through the arterial walls. That's just one example of how fat can actually be beneficial to our cholestorol, not to mention how Omega 3 fats can boost your HDL levels.
