Hello, I am inquiring to see if anyone has any insights on my issue.(s) I started really watching what I have been doing and things again the first full week in July. I have only lost 9 lbs....but the last two days I have been on the scale I have gained 5 of that back...EEK!!! I work out daily as follows...IN the mornings I get up and go to my local gym at 5 a.m. and do strength training on 3 of the 5 days and swim the other 2 days, then in the evenings on Mon, Tues, Thurs evenings and Sat mornings I do Jazzercise. Yes, I have the occassional cheat day, but try not to overdo it. I am athletic, but overweight to say the least if that makes any sense. I have been trying very hard and I know numbers don't define who we are as individuals, but I do want to see them move on the scales. I also stay within my calorie goal, with exception of the occassional cheat day. This is when I start getting discouraged and want to give up. I am a diabetic and my blood sugar readings have IMPROVED tremendously....so that in itself is good I know. Does anyone have any ideas or advice they may could give me. Thanks ALL!

I don't really have much of advice, just wanted to mention that it's very common to gain weight when you just start working out - your muscles retain water to repair themselves.I had it every time i started a new workout regimen- just try to ignore the weight gain and keep going with your workouts.0

Yeah that happened to me this week. Gained five pounds back. I was at 288 last week and then back to 295 for a day or so! I try not to focus on the number as long as I know that I'm doing what I should be. Keep that up and you'll see the changes eventually.0

I'm going to give you the typical answer. Unless you ate 17500 calories over your maintenance calories, then it's just water retention. I was .9lbs heavier this morning, but I know damn well it's not fat. Just a little bloating Don't stress out about it.0

Fluid retention could be the result of exercise, or it could be related to your monthly cycle or the amount of sodium you're consuming. Start tracking your sodium in your diary and see if you notice a trend. Also, your diary is missing a few days of logging in the last couple of weeks. Without that data/info, it's hard to know if you're eating too much or not. Log everything, every day. It's vital to determining if you are really consistently over or under on your calories.0 -
natural body weight fluctuations can be 3-5 Lbs day to day...water retention/release, more/less waste in your system, etc. if you understand the math, you would understand that you can't actually gain 5 Lbs of fat overnight or over the course of a couple of days or even a week.
Where your body weight is concerned, trend analysis is far more important than day to day or week to week changes...this is true regardless of your weight control goals.0 -
I know that as human beings we always want to see tangible evidence of progress or success. That's why in school grades are given as a way to measure our performance. Nevertheless, in the weight loss game, numbers on the scale aren't always the best measure of progress. For women, I imagine our weight fluctuates much more than men especially during our menstrual cycle. All that is to say, if you are working hard and watching what you eat, I wouldn't worry about 5lbs. Perhaps you can try measuring yourself or looking for some other NSV to track progress.
Good luck and keep up the hard work!0
