Hi all! I'm just wondering if too much protein is unhealthy for you? A girl friend of mine is doing the South Beach diet-not strictly, she is still eating some carbs/fruit-just limiting them. She says that you're supposed to eat mainly lean protein and vegetables. I'm wondering if all that protein would make her sick or give her long term issues? I'd appreciate the help!!

Check the link in my sig.

As a rule of thumb, long term protein diets can cause health effects.

This is not true at all.

I have been living a low carb lifestyle for the most part for the last 7 years and my blood work is better than it has been in years.............

I eat HIGH Fat, Moderate Protein and very low carb.

Too much protein can be difficult on the kidneys and lead to kidney stones...which you definitely do not want to happen. Trust me on that one!

Protein in moderation, and drink lots of water to flush those kidneys often!

First: That is not true. If you eat to much protein, lets say.. 300 grams a day. You kidneys can fail! Your body is not able to continue to break the stuff down.

Second: The person we are talking about is a women, who I assume is not doing heavy lifting. So to much protein would hurt!

Third: Grokette, you are eating moderate protein, not HIGH.

That's not an easy question to answer.
It varies per person and their actives, age, gender etc.

When you are losing weight your body needs a lot of protein in order to compensate for all the changes going on, and if it doesn't get the protein from your diet it WILL cannibalize the protein in your muscles. If your friend is consistently losing weight then it is very unlikely that they would be getting too much protein, especially if they are eating veggies along with that.

Personally I don't follow a low carb lifestyle. I tried that a long time ago and it made me feel crazy. My dieting philosophy is to make sure I never feel deprived of anything, so that I am not tempted to binge or eat crazy unhealthy things. It has worked for me so far. I do try and focus on getting a lot of protein each day, but I think it is equally important to provide your body healthy whole grains.

If your friend can eat South Beach without feeling deprived then it is most likely fine, and anyway once they get to goal weight they are allowed more carbs again.

I still eat a lot of protein. Some days I eat 0 (zero) carbs and eat only protein and fat. I do do heavy lifting.

I am getting healthier every year for the past 7 years, with only a blip on my radar from a pituitary tumor and thyroid issues which are now being taken care of.

I eat a lot of protein also. I only eat about a 100 grams of carbs a day. The OP mentioned she was a women. I doubt she is doing heavy lifting, so she wouldn't need as much protein as me and you.
  • Just so everyone knows. I personally think high protein, low carb diets are GREAT. However there is no argument that there are health concerns. Also that most people on those types of diets, once they start eating carbs again, gain the weight back.

Can they be a way to lose weight? Of crouse. Are there risks? You bet ya.

You need to drink plenty of water. I drink over a gallon a day, and I eat almost 220 grams of protein.
