Split routines, machine weight equipment, etc...

When did you start doing split routines? I have been doing 3 full body dumbbell routines a week. I am making strength gains and just moved up to 20 lb dumbbells in each hand. I do not have access to barbells or a squat rack and the only gym that will be close to me is Planet fitness. My apartment gym has a ton of weight machines. Are these useful? I always thought as a noob 3 full body routines is best, but I do want to start using a gym and do split days. Any advice without having access to barbell and squat rack on split routines and using the machine weight equipment?
