10k in 4 weeks

Hello MFP Community,

I signed up for a 10k run for work for Corporate Challenge. I forgot about it until I received a reminder that it is a month away. I have been doing minimal cardio (walking to and from work 2.5km each way - no running though ) for the past 5 months - focusing more on my heavy lifting. My questions are:

1) I purchased a pair of NB Minimus sneakers for lifting. Will these suffice for the run and run training?

2) Should I focus primarily on running now for the month or keep lifting as I have been but start adding a bit of running as well?

3) How many days a week should I run to train?

Thanks folks,

CB

    1. Yes.
    2. Yes... focus on running.
    3. 4-5 days week.... get at least two runs in over 5 miles and you will be fine.

Thanks very much. So minimalist shoes are fine for someone who isn't much of a runner going into it?

I think the fact that you are used to wearing them for your workouts should help you transition to running in them pretty easily. Not to say you won't be sore...and your feet may get a little tender...but overall, you should be fine unless you are planning on jumping to 10 mile+ runs....

BTW... which NBs do have? The MR00 or the High-Rez?

If you are already walking 5K per day, you know that you could always walk to finish the 10K. Try running and see how it goes. You might want to experiment with a run-walk training program where you run a few minutes and walk. For example, run for 3 minutes and walk for 2. That would get you done faster than walking.

Do you use the New Balance shoes when you walk to work? Whatever you walk to work in should be what you use to run the race.

    Good luck and have fun.

I think you would be able to do it. My thoughts toward my runs are that I will run as much as I can. If I have to walk, I have to walk. No big deal. It takes a bit of pressure off, and then I don't beat myself up if I can't run the entire distance.

Push yourself and run as much as you can, but there's nothing wrong with having to walk a few minutes.

As for the shoes, try to get in some running with them on, working up to longer time/distance over the next few weeks. I made the mistake of wearing brand new shoes for a 10K a few weeks ago without transitioninig into them and I ended up injuring my foot :grumble:

    Good luck & have fun!

    1) If youre not used to running in minimalist shoes, I think youre supposed to transition into wearing them for longer distances by starting off with short runs.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I forgot to add that my wife is doing the same 10k for her company so I need to at least beat her time or else I will never hear the end of it. Also, she runs A LOT. Today is day 1 of my new running routine!

Mine are the 20V3 Cross training shoes.
