Error in lost calories from exercise?

I love this site and have been a member for about a month now, but I've noticed a few things...
The amount of calories lost from exercise seems way too excessive. Some days when I've spent several hours hiking in the mountains, it will say I lost 3000 calories when I enter it in!! There's no way that can be right! I've noticed this same thing for many of the other exercises. Where does MFP get the exercise info from? I think it has a few errors in it...
Has anyone else noticed this as well?

Yeah. I usually don't log anything except for strict cardio sessions and I put less time than I actually do.0

To be more accurate, I would suggest getting a heart rate monitor or a fitness tracker.0
