Weight loss after bulimia

Hi there! I suffered from bulimia for about a year and m bow 5 months in recovery. I gained more than 20 lbs and they don't look healthy on me. I wasn't emaciated when I started recovery so I'm a bit heavy now. I asked a nutritionist and she said that the residul binges might be causing my amenorrhea sincs I haven't had my period for 14 months. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone out there could suggest a good way to lose the extra weight I have. Should I count calories? Should I eat whatever I want three meals a day? Should I go vegan? What are your suggestions? I really wanna do it right this time. It's kind of scary actually. I just don't want to go back to the miserable life bulimia gave me. Thanks in advance!!!

Are you seeing a nutritionist or registered dietitian? There is a major difference.

5 months into recovery and you want to lose weight already? Honestly, a message board probably isn't the right place for guidance. I'd recommend a professional that specializes in the treatment of eating disorders. Residual binges are indicative that recovery is far from complete.

First, congratulations on 5 months. That takes heart.

I really think it's too soon, however, to start thinking about weight loss. Are you working with a therapist? If you aren't, I think that would be more beneficial to you. After my initial recovery, I spent a good three years rebuilding my life, including my mental health and my personal relationships, before I even thought about weight loss. Admittedly, I did gain weight but if I had focused on weight loss so soon after my initial "quit" period, I would have relapsed for sure.

First of CONGRATS! From one recovering bulimic to another, it's a struggle but you are so strong for wanting and committing to your recovery.

I agree with Paige682 that you should be working with a therapist or have some help for mental health to toggle the roots of your bulimia. From there, I would take things slow. To much in a short amount of time could trigger unhealthy thoughts and unfortunately ( i hope it doesn't happen but it can) bring back bulimic tendencies.

I personally would keep a record of foods I am eating and a diary of how I feel after eating. It sounds stupid but if you think about it it truly works. Don't set a concrete limit and push yourself or limit yourself dramatically. It might not seem like a lot now but it can be triggering. Work one day at time, accomplish small goals daily - whether it be working on water count or eating healthier or walking.

I hope this helps and good luck! Remember that you are strong for recovering. Be proud of yourself for that!!
