Balancing sugars and proteins

I am trying to get started again with a simple menu...one that is preferably low in meat content. I noticed today that what I ate yesterday put me way over on the sugars...just eating healthy fruits. I was quite surprised to see that. Any ideas for putting together a menu without constantly running into going way over on the sugar limits myfitness pal has at the bottom of the menu page? Thanks!!

Don't worry about a sugar goal. All carbohydrates end up as glucose in the body anyways. If you are getting all your sugar from fruit then you are also getting plenty of nutrients with the sugar. I'd simply open up your goals, choose custom, and raise the sugar goal.

I usually recommend only 1 or 2 servings of fruit a day. Yes, fruit is healthy but again everything needs to be in moderation. The only problem with high levels of sugar is if you eat simple sugars like fruits alot throughout the day it causes your body to focus on burning of the sugar first instead of stored body fat.

This in inaccurate. Total sugar consumed only has an indirect effect on net fat oxidation in that sugar contains calories. Calories in vs calories out determine weight loss. Sure the body will use sugar for energy but it can use protein, carbs, and fats for energy. So long as you are in a deficit for the day, the amount of sugar you eat will not alter fat loss. The deficit will determine rate of loss.

I love your screen name, lol. I so feel like I'm going to meet his end sometimes. :)

As usual, I have to suggest asking your doctor what you should be doing and then following that advice.

My doctors were all about me losing weight, eliminating fat, low sodium and not too much sugar, but I was told I could eat all the fruits and veggies I wanted. I literally asked, "I can sit and shove fruit and vegetables into my mouth all day, non-stop, if I want?" He laughed and said, "If you want to," and then moved on. Skip the pasta, blah, blah, blah. Mostly, he was about cutting fat and losing weight.

As I adjusted to it, I kept in mind that I could have all the produce in the store, if I wanted. It was small consolation, but it was something.

Check with your doctor. See what is right for you. Tell them about your MFP recommendations and ask what they're think. They'll probably refer you to a nutritionist.

It's best to know, to be sure. You can't get that from the Internet.

Both of vismal's responses should be listened to in this thread.
