Soda/Pop... my Achilles heel?

Options
I like my Diet Coke. I do limit myself to one 12 oz can a day. Is it really the Achilles heel to my diet? I drink 6 glasses of water a day and overall eat a clean diet full of proteins, veges, and fruits. I am not seeing the losses as quick as I would like so analyzing my diet. I have given it up before, but do I really have to?? What does everyone think?

I drink at least one ice cold diet coke from a can...every night...and on the weekends it could be 2 or 3...note ticker

If you aren't losing as fast as you think you should you are probably underestimating intake and/or over estimating exercise burns.

If you don't use a food scale for solids you often are eating more than you think.

ETA: no you don't have to give up your diet coke it is not having an effect on your calories deficit.

A zero calorie beverage is not why you aren't losing weight as quickly as you like too. That comes from eating too many calories, to which the diet coke does not contribute.

Diet sodas do not contain calories (or, less than 5 calories, negligible), so they cannot impact weight loss/gain.

Yep. Your diet coke makes zero difference on your diet. Soda messes up your teeth though so do watch out for that (I speak from experience).

There is no way that diet (zero) calorie drinks are going to add an ounce to your weight or slow your weight loss down. Check your settings and make certain you are adding in all of your calories. Weigh your food before cooking if you have too.

It is a zero calorie beverage and therefore there is no way it can hinder your diet.... I have lost a few pounds drinking 2 or 3 a day along with my normal water intake..... Best of Luck

Mine is Diet Dew. In fact today is day one cold turkey. I am drinking more water, trying to not (yet) take ibuprofen, and tried some icky peach green tea...BLAK! I did have a small Chai. I am going to try unsweetened tea in limited quantities and more water.

I think one a day would be fine. But, I know me, and I can't have it in the house. I would be drinking it all day like I usually do.

Aspertame has been linked to actually weight gain (the sweetener in Diet Coke and other Diet products). See this video which explains why. Every body is different from a chemical make up stand point but if you are not seeing the weight loss you are wanting then I would look into removing it from the diet. It can't hurt to try for 2 weeks and see what happens.

Thanks all. The article that soda adds to belly fat got me thinking I needed to cut it out. I will just keep going with calorie counting and exercise. It will happen...

    Patience.

    It's not the soda.
    Have you tried MFP?

I really doubt one can is gonna make or break you. However, make sure that can of pop is included in your daily calorie allowance. I used to drink pop and only pop. A lot of pop lol. I hated the taste of water and missed the fizziness from pop when I had to drink water. However, through genetics, I have really bad and weak teeth. I always have had good oral hygiene, but these 4-5 cans of pop a day were causing me to get just as many cavities a year. Not only is it embarrassing to have so many cavities (I'm afraid my dentist just thinks I'm a skank and don't brush my teeth), but it costs money, time, and pain to get them fixed.

So back in the end of May, I decided to stop drinking pop. I started drinking water all of the time. I used to have excuses to drink pop. E.g., water doesn't taste good with pizza, so I would have a Dr. Pepper then. But that would get me hooked again and I was back to square one. So I simply said no to pop, at all. It was hard the first couple weeks, but I haven't drank any pop since and feel better. No cavities, my teeth aren't sensitive like they used to be, and it is no extra calories! I like it lol.

I just thought I would share my story with you. A lot of people I know say they've lost 10-15 lbs from just not drinking pop any more, but I have no experience with that. I'm not really "overweight", so I didn't notice any weight loss, but others might! Just think - that 100-120 calories in one soda can be replaced with a nice desert!

    No.

If you aren't losing weight, you are not in a calorie deficit. You are either over-estimating your calorie burns or under-estimating your intake. It's truly that simple.

I drink up to a 2-liter a day and am steadily losing. That's not to say that you should drink that much, but it isn't going to hinder your weight loss to have a can/glass per day.

If you aren't already using one, get and use a food scale. Weigh all solids. Measuring cups/spoons are not accurate:

I'll just leave this here (it's also stickied at the top of this subforum): http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1308408-why-aspartame-isn-t-scary

It can't possibly do anything like cause belly fat, since it is created and metabolized from and into compounds that are identical to compounds contained in ALL the food we eat. Even moreso, the quantities of these compounds in aspartame is incredibly tiny compared to what we take in via regular foods.

OK, so the aspartame in diet sodas play a small role in tricking your body, but it seems if you are trying to lose 20 or 30 lbs this is not only or main corrupt. If we are talking the last two to five, maybe.

My thoughts are you need to take another look at your diet, or how many calories that your body is burning on an average day. Or take a second look at your actual portions.
