Daily Inspiration for December 8, 2010
Katie Jay, MSW

Live in the gray area.

Are you plagued by an "all or nothing" attitude? Do you find it hard to make healthy choices when you have made one tiny misstep?

It's time to get comfortable with the gray areas in life. It's time to allow yourself progress, even if you are not perfect. It is better to move forward three steps and back one than it is not to move forward at all.

Action for the day: Be gentle with yourself today and allow yourself to make imperfect progress.

I used to have so much trouble with this same thing. Being in the gray....I'd start the day well, have a small slip, and completely derail for dinner, etc. It was like I only counted the complete successes, and only allowed myself total failures. My new approach is kind of silly, but I think it is working for me. I wear a ponytail holder on my wrist (simple black). When I make a bad food choice, don't exercise, use real sugar in my coffee, etc..... I take the ponytail holder off my wrist. The deal is that the VERY NEXT positive choice I make (even if it is too small to fix the calorie damage) means I get to put it back on. It's a good way of reminding me that I am always just one decision or action away from getting back on track. I'm thinking that for my 20lb marker, I'd like to buy myself a nice simple bangle bracelet that could serve as my reminder.

This is not silly. Whatever works for you is a good method. Just make sure you give yourself a pat on the back for all the successes and not beat yourself up when you slip. The important thing is to keep getting back up and not giving up. Good job Angela!
