Vegetarian

Hello everyone! I am Mary. I am at 199lbs and I am 5'2. Quite a bit of weight for my height. My goal is 130lbs. I am vegetarian, and my Dr. tells me I have to say away from grains. This makes my choice very limiting. Any other vegetarians here?

    Why does your doctor say to stay away from grains? Did he give you a reason?

    Hi there. I'm here! I'm also a vegetarian and cannot have cows milk or egg whites. I can have goat and sheep dairy. I'm back on the site after a long absence. I'm 5'3" and 167. Friend me if you'd like. I could use the support & am more than willing to offer support myself. My goal is 130 pounds as well.

    How?

    Grains alone won't make you gain weight. So unless there is something else in play here, your doctor is quite incorrect.

    Hello!

    I no longer watch my carb/grain intake, but I did for a while just to experiment. I found that it didn't really limit my choices as much as I thought. I still had all the regular stuff I love (beans, lentils, tofu, veggies and fruit of all kinds, nuts, etc.). It kept my calorie intake lower, but they can easily be worked into a healthy vegetarian diet.

    I still had bread for the occasional sandwich, but other than that, I just stopped. If you like pasta, I fell in love with spaghetti squash. I recently started really liking zucchini as noodles, too!

    Like I said, I don't avoid grains anymore as long as they are whole grains. I wanted to try and get a more varied diet than I had already. If you want to try it, go for it! Grains alone will not be the one thing that will make you gain weight, though. :)

    No other medical explanation? If there was no mention of one, then I would ignore your doctor for nutritional advice as grains do not make someone gain weight (medical conditions aside) - excess calories make you gain weight.
  • Hi iv been vegi 25 years now im not very active due to arthritis iv realy struggled with my weight these last ten years after my second child i just kept putting on weight i need to lose about 3 or 4 stone but all i eat is easy food and when i go out and say im vegi i get cheese this cheese that or get offered fish ! Ps i hate salad please help xx

    Thanks everyone! I will slowly add back some whole grain and see what happens. Also, did not realize how low my protein levels are per day until I started posting on this site. Any suggestions or recipes to up it. I am getting around 20 grams per day.

    One protein shake a day will more than double your protein intake.
