What is water weight?

I've had a couple of people suggest that the weight I've lost is "just water weight" and not to get "too excited about it" :grumble: . Well what is water weight? I have not changed my diet other than to track calories and drink AT LEAST a gallon of water a day, so what gives?
P.S. I would really like to be able to tell them to shove it

If you hive a high sodium day, you'll probably retain water. Just before your period, you'll have extra water. It really can fluctuate from day to day.
Drinking lots of water is a good way to help yourself for so many reasons, so good on you!
(I don't know if your friends are right or not, but feel free to tell them shove it, anyway.)0
