Heel calluses

I've had calluses on the outside of my toes and my heels for years and I've never had a pedicure because I absolutely hate having my feet touched. However, the calluses are starting to get in the way of my exercising. They become very sore and painful if I do moderate-paced walking or slow jogging, and I sometimes form blisters underneath them which are also very painful. Sometimes I form blisters that turn into more calluses. I just have a lot of calluses.

What would you recommend I do about them? I've read a lot of mixed things. Some people say it's good to have some calluses because it's harder to create new blisters and whatnot, others say get rid of them. And if I should get rid of them, how can I do that? They're really thick and I don't know if I can remove them on my own. Do I need to have them taken care of by a podiatrist if they're this bad?
