Hi everyone,

I've been attempting to follow a ketogenic diet for the past 3 weeks. I did my research and was prepared for the "Keto Flu". While my results have been good (weight, mood, skin, etc) I'm 3 weeks in and I've been getting nauseous after eating. Has anyone else expirienced the nausea? Does anyone know how to make it go away? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

So what did the research tell you about taking extra salt to compensate for the diuretic effect of the diet change ?

Yep. Salt and potassium were key for me when I tried keto. I would get SO nauseated. Drinking broth (with some light salt, which has potassium, sprinkled in) made me feel much better.
  • Not to mention Magnesium, this is another one that will cause muscle cramps. I take a daily multi-vitamin, 1 magnesium complex and use Morton's Lite Salt instead of regular salt since it has potassium in it.

I did a keto diet a few years ago and like others have said, sodium and potassium were supplemented.

Others will disagree with this, I'm sure, but if I felt particularly rubbish (every 2 or 3 weeks) I'd have a carb binge then a sleep and go back to the keto.

I doubt you really look that bad (nauseous) after eating, unless you're like a baby who makes a complete mess with his food.

But if the way you're eating makes you feel bad (nauseated), change how you're eating.
Go back to a balanced, normal, healthy, varied diet.

I haven't experience nausea from keto. Irritability and weirdness, yes.

Ginger / ginger-ale is a "natural" treatment for nausea.

Multivitamins may help - tight logging can help you identify nutrient deficiencies. Be aware that many MFP food entries do not have complete nutrient details.

Actually now that I think again, after a stretch of keto, then increasing sugar and dairy induces some stomach upset in me. It is mild so I didn't think of it as nausea - just "re-adjustment".

The OP has correctly used the word, "nauseous". Please check the definition.

OP, nausea is symptom of electrolyte imbalance. (Unquestionably, there are other causes for nausea.) When eating a ketogenic diet, you need to be sure to get enough sodium, to prevent sodium deficiency, and subsequent deficiencies in other electrolytes. Try drinking a cup broth or bouillon (regular, NOT low sodium), twice a day, and see if it helps. Or add extra salt at the table.
